I read Stepping Down in exchange for honest review from Write Now Virtual Tours. The book was written by Michelle Stimpson. 

About the book:

The book is about Mark Carter, who founded New Vision Community Church, six years ago. His wife feels abandoned and his son needs him around. Mark needs to step down from his pastoral position to take care of his family and get his family back in order. Will the church survive during his absence?

About the Author:

• Michelle Stimpson is an author, speaker, and educator. 
• Bachelors of science degree from Jarvis Christian College in 1994
• Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Texas at Arlington in 2002. 
• Her books include Boaz Brown, Falling into Grace, and Divas of Damascus Road. Divas of Damascus Road is a National best seller, in addition Falling into Grace has been optioned for a movie from Paulist Productions. 
• Stimpson has published short stories for high school students through her company, Right Track Academic Support Services. 
• Stimpson serves in the women's ministry at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship. She also helps women through her blog, special events, and writing workshops.

Pastor Mark Wayne Carter, III cast his drooping eyes on the clock ticking away on the wall directly across from his desk. Last year his wife, Sharla, had lowered the clock so that it stared at him while he was sitting in his gold-studded leather executive chair. “I know you’re busy doing the Lord’s work, but it would be nice to see you home before the sun goes down sometimes,” she had nagged as she pounded a nail into the wall. She positioned the clock in its new location, then put both hands on her hips. “If you can see the clock, you might actually keep track of how much time you’re spending here in your office.” Mark didn’t like to fight with her about his devotion to New Vision Church. The church was his life’s purpose, the reason he’d walked away from his short, but well-paying career as an insurance salesman. This church had given him a sense of accomplishment he’d never experienced in all his months as top-producer at StateWay Insurance. More than anything, Mark hoped that New Vision Church would be the reason Jesus said, “Well done, my good and faithful servant,” to him one day. Late Saturday nights came with the territory, which was one reason he hired a very young man as his assistant and semi-mentee. At thirty-eight years old, Mark was no old goat, but he wasn’t bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, either. He needed an assistant to knock on the door every hour or so and make sure Mark hadn’t fallen asleep at the computer.

My Review:

I loved reading this book. This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. The book is about Pastor Mark. He is married to Sharla and has an adopted, teenager, named Amani. Amani is in that rebellious teenager stage. Sharla feels abandoned because Mark spends more time at church, than at home. She feels he needs to work on his marriage and his relationship with his son. Sharla also wants a child, but feels God is punishing her. Toss in a temptress, who keeps stopping by the church trying to get alone time with Pastor Mark. You also have the church elders trying to change the direction of the church, with or without the Pastor on board. You also have Mark's assistant and mentee, Johnathan, who is fresh out of seminary school. The church is moving far from God. God definitely needed to be the center of Mark's church. Reverend Kit is definitely a problem. For example, when Mark was lead by God during a sermon, Kit interrupted the move of God to send people back to their seats. Reverend Jackson is also another problem. The elders want the church to have similar programs and services like other semi mega and mega churches, in addition to what market research says,  but Mark wants the church to center on God. The elders want the church to experience growth, similar to T.D. Jakes and Joel Osteen.  Mark knows he let other things get in the way of God. One passage, which stood out, was how one of the elders said the church experienced growth by works, instead of God. That one statement let me know the church was off-centered and not focused on God.

Then tragedy occurred. Pastor Mark was in a car accident, with a female member of the church. Nothing incident was going on. The female member wanted to talk to Pastor about an issue, Mark and Sharla was directly involved in. The conversation started in the parking lot, but then someone shot a bullet, and the two tried to escape. Anyway, the elders feel Pastor Mark needs to step down until the accident investigation concludes. After all, the church needs to protect it's image (insert sarcasm here lol) since Mark had an unidentified woman in the car.

Once again, I loved reading the book. One of the best fictions, I read in a long time.

Finding the good in grief by John F. Baggett (Kregel Blog Tours)

I read Finding the Good in Grief, in exchange for honest review from Kregel Blog Tours. I wanted to read this book because at the time, I was thinking about my former miscarriages. I received a paperback version of the book. I never really grieved over anyone close to me dying, except the unknown babies. My great grandma died in  May, 2000. Could not grieve. I was two months pregnant with a new job, and my job would not let me off work to attend the funeral. One of the reasons I was moved from a temp to a new hire was because of the pregnancy. My inspector from my former department recommended me because I was pregnant. I was a new hire and had not acquired vacation days yet. She died a few days before orientation. I needed the insurance because it was one of those 100% hospitalization plans. I was divided but my grandma and family was visiting the following week.

My grandma died in 2000 as well. She died on November 8th, the day before Brad was born. I did not find out she died until after I had the baby. I thought she died on 9th for the longest until I saw the obituary years later. I had no time to grieve because I was busy with Brad.

I really felt grief after the second miscarry. The first miscarry didn't cause too much grief. I was in pain. Immeasurable pain for the longest. I did not tell anyone. What took me 5 minutes to walk to the bus stop to get to school at that time, now took me 30 to 40 minutes because of the pain I was in. Everything from the back, legs, and feminine areas was in pain. Not to mention the fibroids was acting up, plus back to back Herpes outbreaks. The second miscarry made me question everything: men, relationships, and sex. This one lead me to celibacy, very slowly

Anyway, back to the book:

Dr.Baggett discussed how he lost his son, not to death, but to schizophrenia. I never thought about grief from that standpoint-losing a child, even a parent, or someone close to mental illness. I noticed my kids had mental disorders early.

The book is a short book, consisting of 5 chapters or steps:


Step 1: Trust God and Rely on Others
Step 2: Choose reality instead of illustion
Step 3: Resist the temptation to get stuck
Step 4: Recognize moments of grace
Step 5: Discover new meaning and purpose

Each step also discusses a few sub-steps of grieving. For example. Step 1 discusses shock, while step 2 discusses denial, escape, and victimization. Step 3 discusses questioning, anger, and depression. Step 4 discusses acceptance. Step 5 discusses calling and affirmation. 

I also liked how each chapter ended in discussion questions, with some room to write your answers. This book is great for personal or small group bible study. 

To give you an idea of the first chapter, here are some of the things I highlighted:

1. Grief is universal. Everyone will experience emotional pain. 
2. Grief is a social experience. When something bad happens, it affects more than one person. 
3. Grief is normal. It is not a sign of weakness. 
4. Grief helps emotional and physical healing. 
5. Grief can help us draw closer 
6. Acceptance helps us heal and move on with life. 

This was a great read. I highlighted a lot of passages throughout the book.

Ragged Hope By Cynthia Ruchti Book Review, Book Tour, Giveaway (Litfuse).

I read Ragged Hope, in exchange for review from Litfuse. I received a paperback version of the book. The book was written by Cynthia Ruchti and published by Abingdon.

About the book:

First, the book is Christian-based. One of the sentences, which grabbed me, from the back of the book was Where is God when you are doing everything right, but because of someone else, everything is wrong. But through it all, God is always there, no matter what you are going through.


My Review:
The book talked about choices. Your life is not only affected by your choices, it is also affected by other people's choices. What if your kids, left your grandkids on the doorstep to start a new relationship? What if you are being stalked? or what if the person, you think you are in love with, lies about being single or having kids? (that happened to me before). or your child or husband, has an addiction, which affects finances and stability.

The first story focused on Don and Lila, who was raising their grandkids because their daughter had an addiction. Their plans for a quiet life was quickly halted. Their finances shaken, but they agreed to give their grandkids love and stability, instead of regret and hatred. At the each of the chapter, there is discussion questions, which would be perfect for personal or small group bible study. One of the questions is what sacrifices are you making for someone, you love, but sensing the taint of victimization? Followed by applicable bible verse. Each story is short: like maybe 5 to 6 pages. Each story is a quick read.

Other stories, I liked included:

1. Danielle's husband left her for another woman, leaving her raising 4 kids alone. She did not let her ex-husband bring her additional sadness and distress. She called on God during her time of need. 
2. Olivia was dealing with a death of a child (suicide). Her child committed suicide during a family dinner. 
3. Charla was a teenage mom, but was forced to give up her baby. The father was married.  She got married and had kids later, but had a fear someone would take her kids. I cried reading this story
4. Deana dealt with trust issues. 
5. Marisa dealt with postpartum depression (I been there before). 
6. Tasha's husband gave her the gift of HIV.

Chivalry by Zach Hunter Book Review Tyndale House

I read Chivalry: the quest for a personal code of honor in an unjust world.  by Zach Hunter, for honest review from Tyndale House (Tyndale Blog Network).

The book is about 10 principles of ancient knights combined with teachings of Jesus, that we can use today. How can we help others? How can we defend the oppressed? How do we act with integrity? How do we live with courage and significance?

The 10 principles:

1. I will not go on this journey alone
2. I will never attack from behind
3. I will practice self control and selflessness
4. I will respect life and freedom
5. I will fight only for the sake of those who are unable to defend themselves, for in the defense of justice. 
6. I will honor truth and will always keep my promises
7. I will fear no evil
8. I will always follow the law, unless it goes against what is moral and good
9. I will live and die with honor
10. I will never abandon my quest

My Review:

I was not sure what to expect when I requested this book. By the time, It arrived, I thought, based on the cover, it was a fiction, based on science fiction, fantasy, medieval times. Tyndale does not release the books until the books are taken down from the request screen. I loved reading the book. I was highlighting from the first chapter. 

The first chapter discussed Carlos and his love of trees. Carlos reminded me of Pete Nelson from Treehouse Masters on Animal Planet. He loved to grow them, watch them, study the soil, and study the roots. Carlos got married, had kids, and eventually his wife died. After his wife died, one of his kids, visited with his grandkids. Carlos made a powerful analogy about trees, which I enjoyed.

When a young tree is planted, it is at risk of being whipped about by the wind....If the sapling is tied to a single stake and pulled in one direction, it will grow up learning hard to that side. It will be uprooted by a storm or grow crooked. That's why it is important to stake a tree from multiple directions. The tension on three different sides helps a tree grow straight and true. Its roots will deepen, its trunk will strengthen, and it will bear more fruit (p. 5). 

We need roots to help us grow. We need people, who will be our root in life. People, who will support us when we are falling. Give us strength when we are going through. We can not rely on one human to help us on the journey called life. We can not do this alone, either (which is a problem, I struggle with. I am an introvert, I hate relying on people, but I am learning that I have to (need to). I need to socialize. I need to build relations with people. I need to network and build a community of friends, family, and others. But, your community needs to include mentors. Someone to hold me accountable. Someone, who will be honest. Someone who wants me to grow. Someone to share their personal experiences and I will do the same. I have my mentors. and I am a few other's mentors. I know my personal brand of Stacie is not always accepted and I am learning that is ok. I can be too blunt for my own good. I don't know tact that well. 

Chapter 2 focused on Catalina, who was gossipping behind her friend's back. She realized too late she hurt her relationships and through a priest's words, realized things will never be the same. The priest gave Catalina a task, which involved a chicken and feathers. People don't need to backstab, gossip, attack from behind, or even engage in malicious sarcasm (p. 16). I definitely use a lot of sarcasm. We (I) need to watch my words. 

Chapter 3 focused on self-control. We need to think first, then act second. The book discussed sexual relations. (posting this on Celibacy Diaries as well). In relationships, there are things you should and should not do. We need to maintain control, so we don't end up in regret. Self control doesn't just mean avoiding something, but also focusing on goals (p. 33 to 34). Simply avoiding temptation does not mean temptation will not occur (learned that from the celibacy is sexy chat last week). Temptation is everywhere (media, television, radio, magazines, online, etc). The book talked about focusing on what you want from a committed, married relationship. For example, Stacie wants a christian, celibate man, who can put up with special needs kids. One thing, which stood out in chapter 3 was "there is no such thing as just a movie, just a song, just words, just a kiss. nothing is trivial. everything has repercussions. (p. 37). 

The rest of the book followed the same set-up---shared someone's story, the author shared a story, followed by sound, biblical advice. At the end of the book, Hunter provided discussion questions for personal bible study or small group bible study. Each section also contains an oath or declaration, where you sign and date. You also can write your own pledge on how to grow more chivalrous.

Your Daily Bible Verses Book Review

I read Your Daily Bible Verses, in exchange for review from Tomoson. The book was written by Rachelle Ayala. I received a copy of the book via Smashwords.

The book provides daily bible verses for each day of the year. You can use the book to memorize scripture or get a daily pick-me-up. The book is in a simple format: The Date and the verse. No fancy images or commentary taking up space. At the end of the book, Rachelle provides tips on memorization, which I need. I need to know other verses besides:

Amen
Jesus Wept
In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth. 
The Lord is my shepherd, I can not want (ok that sounds wrong). maybe it's I shall not want.

Lifestyle of a Prophet: A 21 Day Journey to embracing your calling by James W. Goll (Book Review).

I read LifeStyle of a Prophet, in exchange for review from Bethany House. The book was written by James W. Goll and published by Chosen Books. I received a paperback version. 

I chose this book because I have no idea what my calling is. I know what I am good at, but is that what God wants me to do? I have done administration at a church before, but got tired of that quick. Basically, the church had a secretary and I was just helping do some work in Microsoft.  The church bought the software, but had no idea what to do next (besides train the secretary). The problems started when the pastor and secretary started calling my house multiple times per day, in a row sometimes, to get me to come in to work. I worked Third shift at a factory, plus was a new mother. I did not get home until 7 am. I needed my sleep. I didn't mind coming in, but not every day and not before 9 am. I was not going to spend all morning typing documents when I can do that at home. The secretary and I worked the same job, but different shifts. write it down and meet me in the parking lot. lol. I also love to read, write, organize, clean, cook, etc. 

But anyway, back to the book: The book is part instructional and part workbook. Each day provides a lesson, prayer, and questions. There is some space to jot down your answers. 

Some highlights which stood out in the first few readings: 

• Page 24: Selfish ambition is not the kingdom way. Promotion does not come from the Lord, but normally after you been in the game and endured a few rounds. 
• Page 25: Abandon any attempts to build your own kingdom or ministry  Forget about building your own empire. Build His Instead. Worship God passionately. Consecrate yourself to him to be his holy dwelling place. 
• Page 25: Do you want to experience the lifestyle of a prophet? It begins with intimacy. Surrender to Jesus and worship him. 
• Page 29 This is what the prophetic life and ministry are all about---human beings being filled with the breath of God, and then in turn exhaling onto others the breath of life they have received from their creator. 
• Question from Day 1: Consider the kind of friendship you desire to have with Jesus? What do you want that relationship to look like? (p.26). 
• Page 35: God wants to talk to you. He wants more than just the "right" answers so you can pass his tests. He wants to draw near to you. He is your adoring father and he cherishes his kids. Questions from the Lord are an invitation to merge from the place of hiding into transparent honesty and light. 

This was an excellent book. Excellent teaching tool, learning tool, and workbook. It also can be a small group bible study.

Clean by Douglass Weiss

I read Clean A proven plan for men committed to sexual integrity, in exchange for honest review by Douglas Weiss. The book was published by Thomas Nelson.  I chose this book because, even though I am not a man, I can still find some insight to apply to my celibacy.When I noticed the book on Booksneeze, I had to have it.

Some of the highlights from the book:

• Many church leaders fall to temptation themselves, and the ones who do stay pure are often at a loss as to how to help those struggling (p. xvi).  (note: I wish my church offered something on purity and celibacy to adults, instead of just to kids. I have asked, but no program exists yet. I am not even sure who to ask to get an accountability partner, without revealing too much of my past). 
• Internal transformation requires work (p. xvi). 
• Pages 6 to 9 discusses the prevalence of pornography using statistics. That section was mind-blowing. Porn is a billion dollar industry. Some internet porn is worth millions and billions. America is the top producer of DVD porn. 
• Both men and women watch porn. Children, who watch porn, face detrimental effects, which include emotional trauma; reduced marriages; exposure to incorrect information about human sexuality, and increased risk of sexual compulsions. 
• There is a direct connection between your sexual behavior and your destiny in Christ (p. 21). Our level of sexual purity will determine how useful and effective we are. 

• Getting one taste of something can lead to wanting more (p. 32). If you think you can control lust, then you are deceived (p. 33).
  
• When God has to discipline someone because of a hardened heart, things can go wrong for them (p. 35). The book gave the story of Terry, who printed off internet porn at work. The printer stopped working temporarily. Once it started printing, IT was called. They traced the problem to Terry. Terry got fired and his wife later divorced him. (p. 36). Paul was making a phone call to set up some sex, but did not realize his wife was on the other line. Stan was blackmailed by his mistress, while Marc was sued for sexual harassment.
  
• God provides you weapons to deal with the enemy (p. 47). Some weapons include the fear of God, wisdom, and the word of God. The limitation of the weapons is that they can only go in one direction at a time (either facing the enemy or facing those you love. )
  
• Lust is wrong. Lust can produce fruit and it can lead to death. The first stage of sin is lust. (p. 49). Sin is the evidence the seed has grown (p. 49). Sin also can be fertilized with repeat behavior (p. 50).
  
• You have to be willing to become clean. You need the right protection, armor, and a plan to become clean (p. 58 to 59). You also need to be honest and accountable (p. 61). You also need a consequence set-up, if you do fall prey to sexual sin (p. 62).
  
  
  
  
  Sexual immorality does not just affect you, but everyone else around you. Job, family, kids, social life, etc. I did not realize this until years and years later. If I stayed out late, someone would have to wake up to let me in (since I never had my own place). I had to work hard to hide toys and my porn addiction. Hiding the laptop under covers and plugging the ear phones in, for example. I sought out pleasure before relationships. Pleasure also caused me to think lust was love. I been addicted a few times. I wanted to date some of these men, not for their brains and long-term potential, but for their body parts (and what the body parts could do). Sexual immorality definitely distorted relationships. I heard rumors of people not liking me because I was too sexual, but at the same time, the person, who told me about the rumor, wanted to have sex with me. Sex defined how I treated people of the opposite sex. If you wanted to date me, then I would not have sex with you. If you wanted sex, then it was mostly a one-night stand. Had no interest in repeat sex partners, unless they met a few standards.
  
  I loved this book and definitely recommend it to men and women.

Getting to the Root of your Problem

I reviewed Getting to the Root of Your Problem by Dr. Rico Short. I responded to a post on Book Blogs. The book was a 365 day devotional. I received a print edition of the book. The book was published by Author House.

My review:

The book was excellent. It is a daily devotional, full of inspirational (and sometimes hilarious) insights. Some of the insights I liked and helped me included:

1. Day 6 One of the best tricks Satan uses to convince people that he really does not exist-except on Halloween. 
2. Day 8 It is amazing to see people who believe in magic, which is an illusion, and not believe in God, who is real
3. Day 31 If you can't sleep, maybe you need to get up and pray. Somebody always needs prayer. The Lord always wants to hear from you. 
4. Day 60 Love is not just a feeling. Love is an action....
5. Day 79 You may not be feeling very well today. Perhaps you been busy and tired. Take a break, but don't give up. The joy of the Lord is your strength. 
6. Day 133 when issues come up, don't let them blow you out of God's will for your life.....
7. Day 359 I look forward to paying my bills. Why? Because when someone owes me money, I look forward to them paying me. The golden rule works. 

This book, once again was excellent. I been reading something on a regular basis. Of course I read more than one devotional a day. I loved his style of writing the insights.

Tempted, Tested, True Book Review

I read Tempted, Tested, True, in exchange for review from Bethany House. The book was written by Arnie Cole and Michael Ross. I have discussed the book on my other blog, Celibacy Diaries, but have not done my full review for Bethany House. This is the full review.

I chose this book because I struggle with temptation. I struggle with anxiety. I struggle with women' struggles. I struggled with sex addiction. When I saw the book review list for Bethany House, I had to have this book. I had to have a print edition. When it comes to celibacy, abstinence, sex addiction, etc, there is a lot of information out there. There are plenty of books written, but not too many is written from a Christian perspective. I wanted practical, spiritual knowledge, and this book does that. I am glad I got chosen for this book. I did not read this book from start to finish. I started the book at the beginning, then moved to the sections on sex addiction and shame. A lot of good passages stood out and I marked them big time. The book also takes about alcohol, anxiety, shame, temptation, men struggles, women struggles, releasing the past, and unmasking the real you. for this review, I am choosing to focus on the things, which affected me personally.

Chapter 8 discusses the story of Mark and how he struggled with sexual sin (pornography). Porn helped Mark cope with stress. But over time, his heart became darker and more hardened (p. 167). He was pretending everything was ok, when everything was not. He was addicted. His wife called in an intervention with their pastor because she suspected something was wrong. One line, which stood out was Porn is a counterfeit that can ruin our ability to experience the real thing (p. 171). Pornography can also be an idol and the Lord does not allow us to put idols before him. The chapter also discussed accountability. People need an accountability partner when they are struggling with addiction. The book also discussed ways to move forward past porn and sex addiction(. I wrote the steps on my other blog Celibacy Diaries). The book also does nudges after each chapter, with spaces to write down thoughts and concerns. For example, the nudge for chapter 8 focuses on shaking the shame. The section allowed you to think and write about soul-robbing traps; why breaking free is hard for you; and what you would like for Jesus to help you with.

Then, the book moves into toxic shame. First, the book discusses the difference between shame and guilt. "Guilt has to do with our behavior, what we do; shame, has to do with our identity, who we are" (p. 180). "Toxic shame causes us to expect the worst from ourselves because we believe that's who we are inside"(p. 180). We must let go of those thoughts, which say we are a loser, a failure, a disappointment, no use to God, etc (p. 181). This is something I definitely struggle with. There is also an amazing chart on the characteristics of shame, with space to list specific examples and emotions (p. 184). P. 185 also has a spiritual life rating scale. I am a level 3 believer. The scale starts at skeptic, seeker, believer, grace-filled, and servant-minded. You look at the characteristics of each row and determine where you fall in.  a worksheet follows immediately after to note your results. You will need access to a bible to complete some of the notes.

Chapter 9 focuses on Danielle's story. Danielle discussed how even when she knew the right thing to do, she did the wrong thing anyway. I knew having a lot of sex with random men was wrong, but i did it anyway. suffered the consequences too. A few passages, which stood out:

• Temptation is big and it's sneaky, and it knows my weak spots. It can tell when I'm wavering and slip in a zinger at just the perfect moment--sending me right back to square one. It doesn't have to be that way. More and more, I realize, there is a way out. (p. 197)
• No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it (p. 198).
• Your sin is not unbeatable. Your temptation isn't too big for God. You aren't even close to being the only one tempted in that way (p. 200). 

Finally, I will focus on the four stages of Temptation (Chapter 2) p. 54)

1. Enticement: starts with a pang of desire. a thought, a fantasy. what ifs. then eventually the decision to commit. go through the stages of intimacy: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch. 
2. Conception: desire becomes strong. wants to conceive the real thing, whether it's sex, or drugs, or alcohol, whatever it is. we continue to engage with our temptor and ignore God more. 
3. Gestation and growth: sin continues to grow. it affects us mentally, spiritually, and physically. we know the sin intimately. we are enjoying our secret lives. the temptation begins to define us: thoughts, identity, purpose.  we don't consider the long-term effects of the sin. we continue to live in darkness and the light can not penetrate us. 
4. Delivery: the sin matures. it gives birth to death inside of us. 

This is definitely a good book. Definitely will keep reading as temptation shows up in my life. The book felt like more than a regular non-fiction. More than another book to read once. It provided practical, biblical knowledge to temptation and the consequences of each temptation.

Keeping secrets

Tested, True by Arnie Cole and Michael Ross) discusses how we do not need to keep secrets because they can hinder our relationship with God. We need to tell people our secrets and hold each other accountable, so we don't fall back into old habits. I have a few things, I have hidden from the masses. Some have never been discussed on social media or in person at all. I don't want people to think I am weird or strange or crazier than normal. Maybe, I don't want people to treat me with less respect, trust, or even ignore me, isolate me from them.

Cole and Ross discussed how we should choose to live without secrets (p. 176). everyone has problems. we don't have to try to conceal them. There are two types of people: those, whose problems are not hidden, in addition to those, who attempt to haul around secrets (This is me). I always have been a secretive person, only revealing to those as needed. I do have a distrust in general for people. I also dislike revealing too much of my self, because someone may use the information against me or tell more people, who do not need to know. Secrets can lead to broken trust, broken relationships, and broken credibility.

I do have a blog post, sitting unpublished (on my other blog) because it is partially a secret. I was going through something years ago. I have discussed it before, but not in detail. Some old feelings arose and I wrote it down in blogger to get it off my chest, since my note pad was not available. I have one other major issue, I have concerns about, since I was a child. Not sure whether or not to discuss it, unless it is with someone, who can handle it. Matters of Good versus Evil should not be taken lightly. Trying to read a book on the subject, but have not gotten to the meat of the book yet. Well, the part I chose the book for in the first place. When I got my advance copy of TTT, i went straight for the part I requested the book for. When I bought What are you waiting for by Dannah Gresh, I went straight for the part, I bought the book for. Maybe I should talk to someone trusted at church, even though Im not quite sure yet. anyway, rambled long enough.

Bedtime stories and prayers book review

I read Bedtime stories and Prayers, in exchange for review from Tyndale House. The book arrived in the mail two days ago. I immediately read the book to the kids, while I had their attention. My youngest was really in to the book.




The book presented a few stories and prayers for Kids. The book was written by Dandi Daley MacKall. The book is padded and includes three stories (copied from Tyndale House).
1. Bedtime Blessings, which reminds kids that God created night time too. There is nothing to fear when God is near.
2. Thank you, God, which reminds kids to be thankful in everything.
3. God Loves you. Helps comfort and guide kids through the night and throughout life.

My favorite was Bedtime blessings. It was in poetic form. At the end of each verse, it said God created night time too.

My Review:

The book starts out with Susanna, 29,  and her current boyfriend, Adam. Adam was on leave from the military. He wanted to meet her, she said yes and met him. She was hoping for a proposal and he broke up with her. His life had changed and Adam did not see a future with Susanna. . Adam also met someone, while on tour. Chapter two starts Prince Nathaniel's, 32,  story. He is a prince on vacation, kind of bored. Nathaniel's father is ailing and he may be next to succeed as King, which means Nathaniel needs a bride.

I started reading the book. Wasn't sure what to expect, but I was about 15 pages in, before I realized it. The book opened up great, which made me want more of the story. I love a great story, whether fiction or non-fiction, and Once Upon a Prince is a great story.

I chose this book because I loved the description. The book is about Meg Richards, a nurse, whose husband is killed in a car accident by a minor. He was on his way home to see his wife. It was their anniversary weekend. The same night he dies, she also finds out she is pregnant. Meg starts to hate God and wants revenge against her husband's killer. I have not finished the book yet, but this book is moving so far. Some scenes were hard to take in. One, in particular, was Meg rushing to the hospital to view her husband's body. Another, was the scene with her mother, right after the funeral. That scene also started Meg thinking about revenge. The third scene, which stood out, was in the hospital, where the doctor told her she was pregnant, right after viewing Steve's body. Meg does not understand why her husband had to die. He had a good job, well-respected, a community leader, worked in the church, and was a Christian. 

I had to start re-reading the book this morning. The scenes and imagery was powerful. This book was one woman's account of her emotions during a storm. But, with each storm, a rainbow appears. Storms don't last always. (I will update this post, once I finish the last half of the book).

My Review of the first few chapters.

First, the book is Christian-based. I am also a reviewer for Bethany House. I love their books. I chose this book because I felt for the mother and her son. Lydia wanted to keep her son safe. I want to do the same for my boys. I want to keep Brad and Kalen safe, secure, and free from harm.  Lydia also comes from a wealthy family. 

The book starts out with a letter to Micah, from Lydia' father, concerning Lydia and her son. Lydia was a nurse at an army base. , who left without explanation. The letter wanted Micah to care for and provide for his son. Micah has two weeks to respond to the letter or legal action will be taken by Lydia's family. Micah did not believe Nicky was his son and wondered why Lydia had told her parents he was. Nicky was a toddler, when the letter was written. Micah was also dealing with his brother's troubles. Micah decided to travel to Boston to handle this situation. The story gets real interesting after this: Micah gets to Boston; has an interesting conversation with Nicky, and then re-meets Lydia. Lydia had no idea Micah had received a letter from her father, let alone advance knowledge of his visit. Micah is not really Nicky's father, but Lydia's father still wanted him to take responsibility. If you keep reading the book, lies will be uncovered. Why does Lydia's father want Micah to take responsibility for Nicky? Is this why Lydia's father sent for him? What major lie is Lydia hiding from Nicky? Who is Nicky's real father?

This was the start of a great book (first 40 or so pages on my e-reader). I have not finished the book yet, but this is a good book.

Avenged by Janice Cantore

I read Avenged by Janice Cantore, in exchange for honest review from Tyndale House. I received a paperback from them a few weeks back. The book is about Officer Carly--she married and a police officer. She is married to Nick, the new head of the gang unit. Nick was previously injured in the line of duty and is happy to return to work. Carly is scared Nick will get hurt again or killed because of double (possible triple) homicide. Carly is also involved in a high profile case involving the Mayor.

The book starts off intense. I was hooked immediately. The Prologue: Three gang members (Crusher, Diondre, and Rojo) decide to take on a deal on their own without the gang's approval. Diondre wanted out the gang but Rojo and Crusher were more appealing to hang with. The boom--you need to read the rest of the prologue for that. The prologue is two pages long. Then, the book moves into the Burke Trial, Carly is involved in. She is scared of the investigation and being on trial for her involvement. Burke murdered a cop. There is also protests near the Marina over new development. Carly and her partner went patrol the Marina area, heard gun shots and found the three gang members (read the book to find out if they are living or dead). The city just hang a gang war years back and still recovering and not ready for the retaliation of a future gang war. The officers are also not sure, which gang was responsible for the crime. Another gang's tags were found at the scene, covering up another gang's tags. I loved this book. The cover art was amazing--wish my books had beautiful, bright, graphics. Carly must depend on God to get through the challenges been thrown at her.

Women's guide to reading the bible in a year by Diane Storz

I read A woman's guide to reading the bible in a year by Diane Stortz, in exchange for honest review from Netgalley. The book was published by Bethany House Publishing.  I wish I skimmed this book sooner because I truly enjoyed reading it this weekend. Definitely am thinking about buying either the Kindle or paperback version of the book.

Second, The book starts out with inspirational stories, starting with a ladies group, who desired to read the bible in a year, focusing on three chapters per day. The group eventually broke off into multiple groups, including a men's group. The stories also included a Jehovah's witness, who desired more, in addition to a missionary, who realized she lacked familiarity with the bible, even though she taught it.

Why I chose the book: I never read the entire bible. I read the verses outlined in Church, plus a few chapters on my own. Read the book of Revelation a few times, but I never thought of reading the entire bible in a year. Definitely need to work on reading the bible more, plus memorization. Never memorized a bible verse, let alone a chapter,  a day in my life, I think, except like the last verse: AMEN or JESUS WEPT. Of Course, there is In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 

Third, The book was very inspirational. Stortz (2013) discusses how we can find truth and love within the bible. We also can find encouragement, forgiveness,  hope, understanding, accountability, appreciation, direction,healing, release,  and peace. Next, Diane told her story of being born with one, fully formed, hip socket, instead of two. She was placed in full body casts around the age of one, in addition to staying in the hospital in traction. She eventually wore braces and then learned to walk. God is good. Very inspirational since my youngest son can not walk yet. He is in Early Childhood and Physical therapy. Tomorrow, he is getting a gait walker, which is to help his balance and muscular structure. God is truly blessing him with great therapists and he has made great progress since last year.

Fourth, the book provided tips for reading the book. For example, you can start anytime. The pages are not dated. You can use the guide with any bible version. You will read about three chapters per day, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It is also ok if you fall behind or get confused. You can catch up or re-read anytime. Stortz definitely focuses on using the bible to develop a closer relationship with God, which affects other relationships, such as family. Diane also encourages using the book to record your thoughts as you read the book. The book also provides guidelines for group reading.

Fifth, Stortz provided a brief history of the bible (from God speaking directly to men to traditional publishing), in addition to the books of the bible. Everything I mentioned so far, is found in the first 30 or so pages of her book.

Finally, the book provides an outline for reading the bible in a year. Each section has a selected theme, bible verses, in addition to checkpoints. The author discusses each theme first, before getting into verses and questions. Each section also has questions such as name something you learned or write down a bible verse you like to remember. The sections are very short. The bible verses given for each section also has a check box, to check your progress, I assume.

Bible Stories, that end in an hug

I read Bible Stories, that end with an Hug, in exchange for  an honest review from Tyndale House. The book was written by Stephen Elkins and illustrated by Smon Taylor-Kielty. Tyndale House provided me with a complimentary, print edition of the book.

I chose this book for the children. I have the responsibility to teach my kids more about Christ. It is my responsibility to help them develop a relationship with Christ, despite their development level. Another reason, I chose this book was because it was easy to read and the stories are short. I can read a story to the kids and not lose their attention and focus. I did not want a book, where I lose the kids. I have been looking for a children' bible for kids with special needs. Every bible or set of stories I found online was above their understanding. I truly love the simplicity of the book. Each page tells a bible story. Each page also has a bible verse for reference. The book does not use big words. Each story is simplified so the children can gain understanding. The stories are not comprehensive. They explain the important facts. Each story takes a few minutes to read.  And at the end of each story, parents (or whoever is reading the book) gives their children a nice, big hug.

Real Life, Real Miracles

I read Real Life, Real Miracles, in exchange for review from Bethany House. The book was written by James L. Garlow and Keith Wall. The book provides stories from real people, which also shows God's goodness and grace. The book is very inspirational. Steve may have died in a car accident, but he did not. The book also discussed Shari. Shari was boarding a plane from Australia and someone had taken her seat. Since the plane was already ready to depart, the attendant told her to sit in any empty seat.  Shari was in a plane crash. She was about to take some pills to sleep, but a quiet voice told her not to and to keep her wits on alert. The story had a beautiful ending.

The book also discusses cancer, drugs, diamonds, and MS. I did not get a chance to finish the book, but I am definitely planning to buy a paperback book in the future.

The prologue set the tone of the book and could applied to anyone-you got laid off and can not pay your bills; You been praying and can't seem to get ahead. One day, you walk to the mailbox, receive a letter from an old friend, and she sent a check. (reminds me of my mother. always looking for a mysterious check in the mail. The problem is--miracles occur when least expected. ) God still provides--even in our darkest hour, even when we feel despair, even when no one else is there. God will always be around.
