This beautiful Mess by Rick McKinley Book Review (Blogging for Books)

The book discusses looking at our lives through the kingdom of God. Jesus has a vision for the church (his followers), but his followers did not immediately follow the vision (p. 1). 

McKinley discusses on Page 27, how the Jews were expecting a king to save them from oppression and bring freedom. Yet, Jesus came as a baby to a virgin. He did not start his ministry right away. Jesus was the King of Kings, but no one was expecting him to come as a newborn. 

He did not practice his ministry until he was old enough,  then he died for our sins, only to rise again. Jesus also said he would come back and reclaim his kingdom and his bride (followers). 

I loved the title of the book. It sounded similar to Perfect Chaos. In the midst of my trials and troubles. In the the midst of meltdowns, temper tantrums, and therapist appointments. I can still laugh. I can still breathe. I am still alive. My life is perfectly imperfect. Today, I had two assignments due for class, in addition to two product reviews for Tomoson. I got home from church, did some cleaning and cooking, and tried to get to work. I could not get started until after 6 pm. The kids, great-niece, and nephew kept bothering me. From invading my camera space when I tried to do a video review to crawling over me when I was trying to type up my notes into my assignment. I still got my work done and turned in on time, but it took some creativity. 

The pastor at church, talked about following instructions and proper planning. The sunday school lesson discussed financial management and once again, planning. My mess could have been a little different if I planned more in advance versus on the day of. Some days are better than others, but it's now 12:30 am. All the kids are sleep. I finally got some peace to work. 

God's kingdom is messy, yet beautiful. Even though people are not perfect,  even though people are doing their own thing, God is still in control of our messes. Even though, we want to rule our own kingdoms, God is still here waiting for us to get things right. One day, we will be perfect, but we can't get there on our own (p. 5). 

I love how the book is set up. The author presents stories and poems, instead of theology. The book is easy to read and easy to understand. 

The book teaches us that God accepts us in our brokenness (p. 17). He forgives us of our sins (p. 17). Jesus will never bow down to you or adapt himself to your beliefs (p. 21). 

Finally, the book discussed how to follow God's vision. The first step is to repent (p. 28). Repenting does not happen once, but multiple times in our lifetimes. We also have to be Kingdom people. We need to be like God. Live for God. Live for Christ. Simply be in God's kingdom. We don't live for us--We should live for God.

My Review:

I chose this book because I do not understand God's Grace and Mercy. The book consists of 10 chapters. In Chapter 1, Introduction, Tullian discussed Performancism, which best fits me sometimes. According to Tullian, Performancism is the mindset that equates our identity and value directly to our performance and accomplishments,(p. 20). We can let our achievements define our identity. Our money, looks, cars, and degrees can set the stage for our worth and value. When the job or car is gone, then our identity is gone.

I used to work at a manufacturing plant. One of the female employees drove a nice racing car, with all the fixes and updates. She got into a car accident and the racing car was totaled. She was more upset over the car than her life.

For me,  I did not feel complete until I got my bachelor's degree, even though I rarely use it. I felt that I was letting people down because I did not finish college early in life, like you are supposed to. It took 13 years and multiple colleges to get one degree, yet it is a degree without experience, if I don't use it. There is nothing wrong with wanting to achieve the good things in life, but those things should not define us. Tullian said that people spend a lot of time building up their reputation and image  but at a cost to others and ourselves (p. 20). Page 20 also says Performancism is a form of worship--we spend our lives frantically propping up our images or reputations, trying to do it all--and do it all well--often at a cost to ourselves and those we love (p. 20). Instead of focusing on the important things, we focus on the things, which can improve our image, instead of dedicating and focusing our lives on God.

The book teaches people about Grace and how to move in God's grace. Tullian says we can not play it safe anymore (p. 25). We need to be saved and bring others to Christ. This will bring a revival to the Christian faith.

Chapter 2 discusses the exhausted world. We have responsibilities. Sometimes we take on too much responsibility. More responsibilities means you have to perform in more roles. You will fail and you will succeed in life. Problems will occur. Plenty of expectations, rewards, and punishments. We get stressed and burnt out. While, grace is pure, simple, irrational, giving, generous, terrifying, and rare, in addition grace is love that seeks you out when you have nothing to give in return (p. 32). 

This was a good read. This book must be read slow because it has a lot of knowledge and wisdom. It is available in print and kindle format. Have a blessed day.

The book is a 40 day workbook on grace. The sections are organized by weeks and then days.

6. Week 6 The grace-rest life.

God provides us grace so we don't have rely on ourselves. Ephesians 2, verses 8 to 9 says:

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast (p. 15). The book also says Grace plus Faith equals salvation from sin and the penalties of sin (p. 15)

Other things the book says about grace:

1. God's grace must be received by faith. (p. 16 I think). 
2. Grace is  God freely giving us what we don't deserve...
3. God gives us freedom to fail (p. 27)
4. God never gives up waiting for us to return back to him (p. 28)
5. It is possible to do all the right things for the wrong reasons (p. 39). 
6. God's grace helps us turn away from sin daily (p. 43). 
7. Grace gives us the power to forgive (p. 44). 
8. Love involves grace because grace is from God (p. 49). 
9. Grace rescues us from guilt (p. 51). 

I struggle with guilt over past mistakes. Even though I have learned from some of them, I still feel regret, guilt, and shame. I also struggle with understanding grace. 

The beginning of each chapter provides a story, such as the author meeting his wife in Day 1. The end of each chapter gives a thoughts, truths, questions, and a talk with God. Each day is a short read with life-changing guidance.

Dear God Book review and blog tour (celestial book promotions)

I read Dear God ... Letters from the Nursing Home, in exchange for honest review from Celestial Book Promotions . This post contains Amazon affiliate links and images. I received a PDF version of the book. The book was written by Mary Ellen Low. The book was illustrated by Nicole Rose and published by Acorn Press.

The book provides letters to God from residents, workers, and visitors of a nursing home.

I chose this book to review because I love seniors. I have volunteered at a senior community center before. The book does have a crazy font for the letters.

The first story was about John, a man with advanced Parkinsons. The letter was written by the admitting nurse. He has been re-admitted after two years of trying to live independently. Being re-admitted means he will stay at the home until he dies.

The next letter is written by John. John is a veteran and the nursing home is his final assignment. Cecelia's letter is funny. She believes someone is stealing from her and wants to place a mouse trap in the closet to catch whoever it is.

The book also has letters written from kids. The book also has a letter from a 105 year old resident, who asks God why isnt' she in Heaven yet.

Mary-Ellen Low has been a nurse for over 30 years, working in long-term nursing. She lives in West Virginia with her husband and two dogs.

ABOUT THE BOOK/WHY I CHOSE THIS BOOK TO REVIEW?

The book discusses identifying, confronting, and overcoming childhood sexual abuse. I never been sexually abused, but I thought this was an important topic to read about and share with others. I also recently found out a former college classmate is serving life in prison for child molestation. He is 40 years old. It was his third strike. Another former friend of mine also is spending 20 years in jail for child molestation. The power of Google. I just wanted to see what both was up too and found their prison records. It was a sad day.

I never thought these two men would never touch a child. They both had good jobs, had kids of their own, had certifications, degrees, etc. They both loved women as well. I don't know what made each go and commit their heinous deeds.

Next, I have been asked for sex by an older cousin (not biological) when I was a teenager. I walked away and never told anyone. I was a virgin and I was not going to sleep with a married cousin.

Third, another incident was when I was staying with someone in Atlanta. I had the webcam turned on, having a video chat over Skype or yahoo. The chat was generic, non sexual, when a child, walked by in the background, asking me for something. This man actually asked me if I would touch the child on the genitals. He would even pay me. I quickly shut down the chat and blocked him.

Finally, when I was an adult, I was walking down the street to a friend house. An older man, who was sitting in his yard, tried to talk to me. He thought I was underage. I told him, if he thought I was underage, why was he trying to talk to me. I kept walking. I did not entertain the conversation further.

In the book, the author not only shares her story of abuse, but shares other individual's stories. The book also teaches people, we need to:

1. Identify sexual abuse of children
2. Raise awareness about sexual abuse
3. Know the signs and symptoms of sexual abuse
4. Confront sexual abuse of children
5. Believe the child and investigate all claims
6. Error on the side of caution (the child). 
7. Stop believing the accused is always innocent.
8. Overcome childhood sexual abuse. 

The book is available in kindle and paperback. 

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Yvette is an author, teacher, conference host, licensed minister, Christian, and public speaker. She is also a graduate of Grace Christian College, where she completed a masters in divinity and a bachelors in theology. Next, Yvette has a bachelors in business administration with concentrations in finance and a minor in leadership studies. Finally, Yvette has over 30 years of tax income preparation and bookkeeping experience. 

Second, Yvette founded Surrounded by Faith Ministries, which focuses on bringing women to Christ. She also wants to bring families closer together. 

My Review:

The book is 102 pages of knowledge. The book appears thin, but within contains valuable information. I also love how the book is written from a Christian perspective. Tatum gives credit to the father. She also provides bible verses and chapters throughout the book. 

I also like how the book provides a definition of childhood sexual abuse on page 1: Childhood sexual abuse is a form of child abuse, in which an adult or older adolescent uses a child for sexual stimulation. Forms of child abuse include asking or pressuring a child to engage in sexual activities (regardless of outcome), indecent exposure of the genitals to a child, displaying pornography to a child, actual sexual contact against a child, physical contact with the child's genitals..., viewing of the child's genitalia for the purpose of sexual gratification, or using a child to produce child pornography (Allen-Tatum, pp. 14 to 15). 

The book also contains a powerful poem on page 17 and 18 called He touched me. 

The author's background on her sexual abuse was hard to read. She was molested by four men before she turned 13 years old. She did not realize she was being molested until later. She did not know. The book teaches people to know when abuse is occurring. Know the signs and symptoms. Parents should also teach kids about appropriate and inappropriate touches. Parents should also consider the people, who we bring around our kids.

Next, the book provided 8 myths about childhood sexual abuse. Myth 1 applied to my former friends, who are now in jail. Normal-appearing, well -educated, middle-class people don't molest children (p. 36). My friends appeared normal, but they had a secret past, which abused children. Myth 4: Children who are being abused would immediately tell their parents. When I googled my former classmate, I found an article from Former Classmate gets life in Jail, Georgia. The article said the molestation started in 2005, but the children did not tell their parents until 2010. My classmate was convicted in 2012. The children did not tell right away. The molestation continued for 5 years before the children said anything.

Then, the book discussed the Underwear rule. The underwear rule: a child should not be touched by others on parts of the body usually covered by their underwear. They should not touch others in those areas. Tell children it is not okay if someone looks at or touches their private parts or asks them to look at or touch someone else's private parts. (p. 46). Page 80 also provides a diagram of the offense cycle, which starts with deviant sexual fantasies and images, and ends with self-centered internal conflict. The book also has a chapter on forgiveness. To set yourself free from bitterness, hatred, and anger. It also includes forgiving others. This is the time to let God be God and let him do his work.

Grace Unplugged and Own It Book reviews (Flyby Blog Promotions)

I reviewed Grace Unplugged by Melody Carson for Flyby Blog Promotions. I also reviewed Own It by Michael and Hayley DiMarco. The post contains Amazon affiliate links and images.

I am behind with this review. I thought it was due next week. I went through a few 100 emails and found the reminder. I am late.

First, Grace Unplugged is a fiction novel. The main character is Grace Trey, an 18 year old singer, who is waiting for her big break. Her big break may cause her to shift from her Christian faith. Will Grace fall to temptation or hold fast to her beliefs. The movie is being released October 4, 2013. I have seen the previews all last week on television. The movie will star AJ Michalka and Kevin Pollack. The movie also features music by Chris Tomlin and Jamie Grace.

Next, Own it, discover your faith in God is a non-fiction book, which discusses owning your faith. When you own something, you take more responsibility for it. You take better care of it than something you are renting or borrowing. People need to own their faith. Be accountable for their beliefs and values.

Some passages, which stood out included:

Your faith isn't so much about what you have done or not done, but what God has done and how much he has loved you. The most awful thing about faltering faith isn't the human relationships, which suffer......but it is the fact that you are missing out on the love and acceptance God has waiting for you (p. 3). 

When you own your faith, you are a changed human being. You are a safe, human being. you don't rely on others to affirm you or accept you, but you are still able to accept and love them. You are able to love unconditionally and any rejection others may offer is no longer something you take personally. (p.3). 

Those passages stood out  and made me want to read more of Own It. I grew up in the Christian faith. I always knew Jesus existed. He died on the cross for our sins, but I'm not sure if I have ever owned my faith. I sometimes still want others to accept me. I hate rejection. The book said I may have faked my faith. On page 7, it states:

Ownership can also apply to a state of heart, a way of living whereby you make what you say and what you do agree. As in when you own your actions, rather than faking your way through life, living a double life, pretending to be something that you aren't in order to please those you love. 

There are a lot of people faking their faith instead of owning it. Recently in Sunday School, a female said that there is a difference between being a fan and a follower of Christ. I have been a fan. I have faked my faith. Just because I believe in Christ, does not make me a owner of the faith. It does not make me devoted. I have to change my behavior, my thoughts, to reflect Christ. I have a lot to work on. like praying more, reading the bible more, stop cussing, and a lot of other things. Just being mostly good isn't good enough. Doing the right things does not make you have ownership of your faith, as well. Having faith in myself and in man, will lead/has led to disappointment.

Own it is a great book to add to your book collection. I wish there was a workbook or study guide for the book. I have read another one of Hayley and Michael DiMarco's books, Cupidity. I got it from Tyndale Rewards. The DiMarco's have a great writing style and I have learned a lot from their books.

Wounded Women of The Bible Book Review (Kregel Blog Tours)

My Review:

I chose the book because it had a woman-focus. The book consisted of 13 chapter, discussing different women in the bible. Some of The women included: Abigail, Dinah, Ruth, Hagar, Jochebed, Mary and Martha. Each of the women went through a particular problem, which damaged and wounded them. For example, the first chapter discussed the two women in Solomon's court. The women were prostitutes and they both had babies around the same time. One woman accidently killed her baby, while she was sleep. She rolled on top of her. She panicked and went and stole the other woman baby. She tried to pass the other woman's baby off as her own. The living child's mother took her to court. Solomon said cut the baby in half and give a half to each woman. The true mother said no, let my baby live and give it to the other woman. The true mother got her baby back. The story discusses pain, heartbreak, death, life, and friendship. The story also showed compassion and love. The true mother did not want her baby to die. She was willing to hand her baby over to the other woman, so her baby will life. The two woman was best or close friends before the ordeal, but grief, panic, and lying, changed their dynamics forever. 

Each chapter gives discusses a biblical woman, in addition to providing a relatable story by each of the authors. Each chapter also has discussion questions. The discussion questions are at the end of the book. Great for small group discussion.

Valerie Coleman The forbidden secrets of the goody box Book Review and Blog Tour (Write Now Virtual Tours)

I read The Forbidden Secrets of the Goody Box, by Valerie J. Lewis Coleman, in exchange for review from Write Now Virtual Tours. This post does contain affiliate links.  I received a paperback copy of the book. I wanted to read the book because the description was interesting. Some aspects of the book could apply to Celibacy Diaries. 

The book is about Debra, who has been in a string of bad relationships. She jumps in the bed too quickly. At the beginning of the book, Debra is in a "relationship" with Vincent. She is like a sugar mama to me. They have different beliefs in God, but she wants to marry him. She also spends a lot of money on him. As she leaves church, she decides to accept his proposal, but catches him in a bed with a "friend". A "friend" she only been on a few girly dates with. Not a real friend. Eventually, she moves on to another man, who only dates her long enough to get her in the bed, only to never be heard from again. To me, she gives her all to men, who are not worth her all. 

The book also discusses Debra's two friends, Rachel and Sherry. Rachel is in the perceived ideal relationship with Brian, but the relationship has problems. Rachel brought their company out of scandal. She also runs around being superwoman, while he does, what seems to be nothing. One thing, which stood out, was Rachel feels that she can handle her marriage is because of her office husband. She seems to confide in him more than her husband. 

Sherry, is in a relationship, with Dwight, but not much is known about Dwight. She had to change her behavior and attitude to make room for Dwight. Sherry used a relationship guru to work on her. She recommends Dr. Reed to help Debra out in her funk. 

One passage, which stood out was the first meeting with Dr. Reed. Dr. Reed told her that men, think of women as a walking vagina, aka the goody box. The Dr is going to help her navigate the forbidden secrets of the goody box. Dr. Reed also said that women give away the goodies, without too much thought, then wonder why men quickly leave after getting it (p. 80). Some men will say or do anything to get into the goody box and then leave after accomplishing the mission. The heart is not involved in the beginning as much as the penis is.

Yet, Debra does think with her vagina first. When Dr. Reed asks Debra to create a list of characteristics she wants in a mate, Debra lists sex first before God. God did not come in until the end. Having a relationship without God as the foundation will result in disaster. The list got longer after she calls Rachel and Rachel definitely has a business mindset.


One way to see if a man wants you or wants sex is to withhold sex. Do not have sex with a man right away. Of course, you do have men, who are willing to wait and still leave, but I digress. Celibacy is a wonderful thing. Back to the book, Dr. Reed also says the goody box has magnetic field, which draws men in. If you give in too quickly to sex, you may not get him emotionally attached to you. Of course

This reminds me of an conversation I had with a former sex partner back in 2005 or 2006. He was only a convenient sex partner, since he stayed within 10 to 15 minutes from me. One day, I was having an issue with the soon-to-be-ex-husband. I am separated. I decided to vent quickly to this man. He told me that he isn't interested in all that. He does not want to know about my problems or issues. He just wanted sex. Even though, he made this comment, which upset me, I still had sex with him. The comment changed my attitude and behavior towards men. I was more closed off. I did not want to share anything with them. If all I am is sex, then I should not get emotionally involved.

Other things I liked in the book:

1. Dr. Reed said to know what you want before getting into a relationship (p. 82)
2. If something isn't working, then change how you handle the situation. Doing the same things over and over again is insane. 
3. Write a list of characteristics or traits you want in a relationship. Be specific, not vague, not generic. Then, provide the why each trait is important. Also list if the trait is a deal breaker or not. For example, Dr. Reed said, if you want a man, who loves God. Does that mean he attends church weekly or just major holidays? Is he actively involved in several ministries or just acknowledges a superior being exists? (p. 84).

Chapter 1

For the Love of Vincent

Sunday-morning service stirred Debra Hampton’s heart. The poignant message convinced her to resolve a matter that had her torn for almost a year. She had been undecided about whether to marry her live-in boyfriend, Vincent. He didn’t share her religious beliefs and refused to go with her to church, but she knew that he was the best man for her.

He laughed at her silly antics, talked with her about her ambitions and encouraged her to greatness. He made her the focal point of his life and involved her in every decision no matter how minute. The thirty-minute drive from the inner-city church to her suburban home gave her ample time to reflect upon the life they would build together: three children, business partnership and unlimited mind-blowing sex. The rush of blood to her southern bell—the name her mother called her vagina when she was a child—gave her pause. Fortunately, she was stopped at a red light. She clicked through the Sirius Satellite stations and then opted to enjoy tunes Vincent had downloaded to her iPod a few nights prior.

As she turned into Creekwood Estates—a lavish community north of Dayton—she admired the mansion-sized homes set hundreds of feet from the street. Manicured lawns featured rows of exotic trees, shrubbery and blooming flowers. Cobblestone driveways boasted luxury cars and backyards had customized gym sets or in-ground pools. Her stucco and brick palatial home was small in comparison to those of her neighbors, but it was big enough for her family-to-be. She loved the side-entry, three-car garage because it camouflaged the unpacked moving boxes from passersby. She parked in the usual spot—closest to the mudroom door—and then she smiled wide. “He’s home.” 

Debra grabbed her purse and Bible and then jaunted into the house. She placed her belongings on the granite countertop, careful not to make noise. Since the television wasn’t locked on a sporting event, Vincent had to be resting in the master suite. A 3,500-square-foot home and he preferred the family room and bedroom. She slipped off her stilettos, tiptoed up the stairs. Her heart beat faster with each step. She wiped her palms together to dry the sweaty moisture, pressed her ear to the door. His subtle snores seeped through. She giggled and then covered her mouth to halt the escape of more laughter.

She opened the door, peeked in, swung it wide. “Vincent! What the devil?” “Debra, what are you doing here?” After a quick dismount, he rummaged the floor for his Fruit of the Looms. “When’d you get home?” “Who is this woman and why is she in my bed?” She ran to the side of the bed, towered
over her betrayer. Breath stalled in her throat, eyes widened. “Catherine!” Catherine—the first person to welcome Debra to the neighborhood—reached for her clothes, scurried to dress. Debra lunged at her, snatched her by the ponytail, drew back her fist. Just as she connected with Catherine’s right jaw, Vincent grabbed Debra around the waist, pulled her away. She flailed her arms, kicked at his shins, head-butted him in the mouth. When he released her, she pursued Catherine who was halfway down the stairs, underwear in tow.

Not Quite Healed Book Review and Blog Tour

I read Not Quite Healed, by Cecil Murphey and Gary Roe, in exchange for review from Litfuse. The book was published by Kregel Publications, another review site I am on. The book touches on a sensitive topic: male survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

The authors were both victims of childhood sexual abuse. The authors want to help people seek the healing needed. The book is written from a Christian perspective.

My Review:

I have never been sexually abused as a child. I am not a male. I have had problems with sexuality and abusing God's purpose of sex. I chose this book because of the topic it focused on. I have read books written to males to help overcome sexual issues (Clean by Douglass Weiss, for example).

To me, the book took on a different approach than other books I read. The first chapter deals with Shouldn't I be healed by now? The author discusses even though the abuse happened over 20 years ago, he still is not fully healed. He still has issues, he is working on and working through. I liked the honesty in the first few pages. Somethings, in life, we still have remnants, which are lingering behind.

Another passage, which stood out, was first, we need to realize our sexuality involves our total selves-mind, body, emotions, and spirit. God created us that way, and sexuality is a powerful force in our lives for good or for evil (p. 9)

Chapter 2 focused on Why am I still not healed? healing isnt an easy process. healing isnt quick. the authors also discussed how people look to others to fulfill unmet needs. people seek healing from others, but are left disappointed. We look to people for acceptance and love, but sometimes we do not receive it back in the way, we like, still being disappointed. People need to seek God and put God first.

The book presents 40 short chapters ranging from forgiveness, flashbacks, compassion, accountability, responsibility, emotions, pornography, and acceptance.

Some things I learned:

• We can use pain for good and learn from it. We can help others, who have gone or going through it. OR we can take the pain and let it define our total behavior and attitude(p. 17).
  
• Healing is a journey, not a quick trip (p. 18). 
• Humans need affection. We will seek it out, even if it's coming from the wrong source. 
• All actions are not evil, but the motives behind the actions can be. 
• People have a need to be protected, a need to feel safe. 
• To heal, we must be willing to peel back the deep layers of ourselves. Staying at surface level will not bring us acceptance. 
• Abuse does not affect individuals only, it affects families and relationships. It can affect intimacy as well (p. 53). 
• Be honest and open, when you are healing from pain. Name your pain. Call out your pain by it's name. If you are dealing with abuse, say abuse. If you are dealing with a porn addiction, say it. Trying to subdue it (if that's the right word to use) or minimize it, seems like denial, lying, or ignorance (p. 55). 
• God is there for us for strength, grace, mercy, and love. If we fail in our progress, confess your sins and ask for forgiveness. 


The book is a great read. Each author discusses how the abuse affected him. The book denotes Cecil or Gary, when they are talking, so you won't get confused. I love the honesty of Not Quite Healed. The book does provide practical knowledge, which can be applied to anyone going through pain and who desire healing.

You are not a Christian because...........

I never understood why people assume Christians are perfect or somewhat close to perfect.

• You cussed me out last week, therefore, you must not believe in God.
•  I don't know why you go to church because you used to have sex with random people. 
• You violently hit me, therefore, you must have the devil in you, and not a follower of God. 

The church is full of sinners. No one is perfect, but Jesus. I do have issues and concerns, which needs improvement, but that does not mean, I do believe in or need the father, the son, and the holy ghost.

Everyone has flaws, concerns, and make mistakes. We all fall short of the glory of God. If the church was full of perfection, there would be no need for Jesus to die on the cross. There would been no need for Adam and Eve to be banished from the Garden of Evil. Eve did not succumb to temptation from the snake. Adam did not partake of the fruit and no, no one hid from God in the Garden. David did not fall prey to voyeurism and spy on Bathesheba bathing, then killed her husband. And Paul, I mean Saul, would not have converted to the side of Christ. Christianity would not exist. Everything would be under the old law or pagan law or some weird law, I don't know anything about, which occurred before Christ.

I am a sinner and I believe in God. I believe Christ died for my sins---the ones  I know about and the ones I do not. I cuss. I fuss. I used to be promiscuous. I lie. I cheated. I been jealous and envious. I wanted to kill a few people. I committed adultery. I stole. I have not honored mother and father. I been lustful and disobedient. I been deceitful. I am not a perfect saint. I am not angelic being. I try to live under the grace, mercy, and love of My Father, who lives in Heaven, honor be his name, his kingdom will come back one day, Amen.

My Review:

The book starts out with a discussion on how some people don't believe in the bible. Some people doubt the bible. Some people think the stories are made up (Noah's Ark and the Tower of Babel for example). The bible is under attack. The book is also easy-to-read, which is good  for any theology book. The chapters are short as well.  Next, the first chapter discusses how to pronounce Babel. Chapter two discusses attacks against Babel's existence (racism, mythology, and re-interpretation). I love how the book provides biblical proof for every attack. Then, the book goes into the biblical account of Babel. Before, the whole world had one language. Everyone could communicate with each other. Of course, someone (or a group of people) got an idea to bake some bricks. Another someone (or group of people) wanted to build a city, high as the sky. They wanted to be renown, but this displeased the Lord. The Lord decided to confuse this wonderful group by giving them multiple languages. No one understood the other and Babel was not completed. The people was also scattered across the Earth. Babel helped divide families and divide lands (Genesis 11: 1-9).

Chapter 6 focuses on why people was disobedient to God. Why did God confuse their language and scatter people across the heart? The book talked about how God is a fair Judge and does not punish without due cause. We also are sinners, falling short of the glory of God. The descendants of Noah, at that time, wanted to defy God, by scattering across the earth, on their own. The people also wanted to be renown and make a name for themselves, versus God. Chapter 7 focuses on when the scattering occurred. The book discusses how the scattering may have occurred 106 years after the Flood. The scattering may also have caused the world to break apart into multiple regions (sort of like Pangaea. One continent at first, but broke apart into multiple regions and continents). There already had been continental movements during the Flood (Mount Arafat, for example was formed during the flood) but more may have occurred after Babel. There is a chart, in Chapter 7,  which lists estimated biblical dates, determined by Archbishop James Ussher. Chapter 8 focuses on where the scattering occurred. Babel occurred between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The Garden of Eden was also located near there.  YET, The Tigris and Euphrates may not be the same Tigris and Euphrates from the Garden of Eden. Sometimes people name places after other people, places, and things (Martin Luther King, Thames River (3 locations), Versailles. Names can transfer from one thing to another thing. The book also discusses Babylon.

I was definitely impressed with this book. I normally do not read theology because some of it is difficult to understand. I prefer the practical knowledge. How can I apply this theory to my life?  This book was easy to read and easy to follow. The chapters are short. Each section also has footnotes and references for additional study. Definitely am thinking of getting a print edition.  I chose this book because I have heard of Babel in the bible, but did not know much of anything else about it.  The book also had easy to read charts and photographs.

First, the book is a reproduction of the 1890's classic work.
The book focused on "removing the barriers we too often place between our faith and God's love" (Copied from the back of the book).

I chose the book because I wanted to read more Christian-based books, especially practical knowledge and theology. I tried to get into the book, but it is a lot of language, I did not understand. For example, "There is no attribute  of God, which self-righteousness does not impugn" (p. 2). Luckily, my mother reads a lot of theology and helped on some of the passages. I definitely recommend pulling up a dictionary as you read the book.  You will see such words as comest, contemned, thee, doth, seeketh, and tis. Some passages are just hard to read. I am still reading and re-reading the book for understanding.

My Review:


I started reading the book today, uninterrupted for about an hour or so. I was halfway through the book before I realized it. The book talked about God's love through adoptions and mission work. The children faced real struggles at an early age. Death of parents and abuse was covered in the first three stories. I chose the book because I loved the description. I am also reviewing more Christian-based books. I wasn't sure of the book at first, but I am glad I was selected for the blog tour I was completely moved by the time, I got to Antonio's story. Ben and Joseph's story was first. They was adopted from Africa. Ben's mother had tuberculosis. Ben also was malnourished. Joseph's mother was pregnant and worked for an elderly lady. She went into labor, headed to a clinic to deliver the baby, and died during child birth. She left Joseph with her employer, but after a week of not hearing from Joseph's mama, the employer took Joseph to the orphanage. Both boys were adopted by the same family


My emotions took a turn for the worse, when I read Antonio's story next. I was in tears. Antonio lived in Mexico. He had epilepsy (with seizures). I used to have seizures, in addition to both of my sons having seizures (Brad grew out of his, Kalen still has them). Antonio's mother had no support because people avoided her. Antonio was also kicked out of school because his teacher could not handle his disorder. His father was not around much--then he died. His mother was also facing cancer. She was worried that when she died, no one would care for her son. She also thought about taking Antonio to heaven with her. An neighbor noticed Antonio and called a case worker. The case worker called a home, which took in kids, no one else wanted--especially those with mental and physical disabilities. I cried when I read how the mother wanted to take Antonio to heaven with her because no one wanted to care for her child. As a mother of special needs children, I was hurt, sad, and definitely empathetic. I hope that when I die, my kids will not be split up and will have a happy home. My family offers little support and their father offers little support.


Next, I read the story of Caitlyn. She was bullied at school. She was being abused, but protective of her mother. Behavioral problems also occurred. She did not want to be taken away from her mother. Her mother's boyfriend was beating her. Her mother was pregnant and on drugs. Her brother was born with drugs in his system. Her brother was taken away, when he was born because of the addiction. both siblings were adopted by the same family.


Finally, the book talked about Jorani. Jorani, who was a girl, lived in Cambodia, in a river village. Her parents died in a traffic accident, months prior. She and her sisters lived with Grandma, who was ailing, and Jorani had to help care for the younger ones. She took on small jobs to help feed her siblings. Jourani heard about a jobs, in the city; went to inquire about one, and he started her into child slavery. When she was no longer useful, she was homeless. Her granny started feeling better and started searching for her granddaughter. Jourani's story had a beautiful ending.


At the end of each story, the author provided a space for you to journal your thoughts and answer a question. This would be great for small group studies. The book is also written in easy-to-understand language. This book was a quick read because I was so engrossed in the story. The author also provides an interview with Joseph and Ben, at the end of the book.

Bathsheba bathed in Grace

I read Bathsheba, bathed in grace: how eight scandalous women changed the world, in exchange for review from BookSneeze. The book was written by Carol Cook and Published by Westbow Press

I chose the book because I loved the cover and the description. I wanted to learn more about Bathsheba and the other 7 scandalous women. I heard about all of them, except Tamar before. I also liked how the book was written from a women's point of view. The book discussed the husbands, but did not focus on David (Bathsheba), Isaac (Rebekah), Abraham (Sarah), Adam (Eve), Jacob (Leah and Rachel), Onan (Tamar).

The book told the stories of Eve, Tamar, Hagar, Rebekah, Rachel, Leah, Sarah, and Bathsheba. It is part ficitionalized and part based on the bible. The stories came to life. I really enjoyed this book, starting with Bathsheba.I am not a bible scholar. I have to start at the table of contents to find a chapter in church because I have no idea where each book is located, except Genesis, Exodus, Revelation, Psalms, and Proverbs. I knew David watched Bathsheba bath from his window. I also knew he orchestrated the death of Uriah, her husband. I did not know she had a miscarriage. That touched me deeply because I know how that lost feels. The lost, the guilt, the hurt. The story had voyeurism (he watched her from the window), adultery, murder, miscarriage, marriage, guilt, grief, pain. After reading Bathsheba's story, I wanted more. I read the stories of Sarah (Sarai), Rebekah, Rachel, and Hagar next (not in that order). I learned more about their lives than I read in the bible (which is sad, I know), but at the end of each story, Carol lists the bible chapters and verses, to read the full story about these amazing women.

Tamar had survived two dead husbands (the sons of Judah), one of which defiled the marriage bed. She was also promised another husband from the house of Judah, once he was old enough.  Sarah laughed at God. Rebekah and her son helped deceive Isaac. Eve hid from and lied to God. Leah and Rachel were both promised to Jacob. He wanted Rachel, but received Leah at first. Had to work another seven years for Rachel. Leah was also the most fertile.

Freedom from Worry

I read Freedom from Worry, in exchange for review from Netgalley.com. The book was written by Patricia Wilson and published by Upper Room Ministries. 

I started the book a few weeks ago. Read the first section. Then, realized I needed a bible. I have the bible on Kindle and on the Kindle Cloud. Kindle had issues and so did the cloud. Did not occur to me to pull up a bible online (dummy).

I chose the book because I do worry a lot. I worry about the kids. I worry about school. I worry for the sake of worrying.

The book is a 28-day bible study on worry. Will be great for small-group bible study or Sunday school. Definitely thinking of getting the paperback or kindle edition.

The book is simple to read and easy to understand. Each chapter is also two pages. The book teaches us about giving our worries to God. This brings peace and freedom versus bondage and slavery.

The book has a good introduction. The first section hit me on the head: Are you already worrying you won't make it through the book? Each section has a reading section, reflection, prayer, and mediation. If you have the paperback, you have a place to write your prayer.

I also downloaded another ARC (advanced reader copy) from Netgalley. I been skimming through the book and  I like it, but it is time to put like to action. I need to give a lot of my worries to God.

Powerful prayers of gratitude

I read powerful prayers of gratitude, in exchange for an honest review. The book was written by Glenn Langohr and published by Sanctified Publishing. The book was gifted to me by the author. I responded to a BookBlogs post, with the author looking for reviews. 

The book starts out well: in prayer. What better way than to start out a prayer book with prayer?

The power of prayer changes things dramatically. We need prayer. We need to be humble in prayer. We need a submissive attitude, instead of an attitude of superiority. Glenn also discussed how we always do not know what to pray for. Yesterday in Church, the pastor said to pray, but I was not sure what to pray for specifically. I know what I need and want, but I want to make sure I am praying for the right things with the right words. I definitely don't want to use the wrong words and get the wrong thing.The Holy Spirit prays for us when we don't know the words to use. We also can seek the bible for understanding. All we have to do is try and the Lord will do the rest---was a great statement in the book. We need to put forth the effort and allow God to be God. God understands our thoughts. He knows what we are going through. Our prayers may not always be perfect, but God can guide us in the right direction. 

The book is a good read. It is easy to read. The material is presented with short, easy to read passages, versus long, lengthy passages. Glenn teaches us about the power of prayer. Prayer can heal. Prayer can strengthen our relationship with God. Prayer can be anytime, anywhere, any position (on your knees, prayer closet, driving in your car, standing up, etc etc etc). Developing a stronger prayer life helps us develop a stronger relationship with the Father. 

The book also presents prayers for certain topics like Forgiveness, Grace, Strength, Patience, Protection, and Hope. The topics also have biblical verses for reference.

The Gospel of Yes by Mike Glenn

I read the Gospel of Yes, in exchange for review from Blogging for Books. The book was written by Mike Glenn. The book was published by WaterBrook Press. The book discussed saying Yes to God's plans for your life, no matter what they may be. We have to live according to God's will, instead of our will. It is not an easy task, but it builds up our heavenly rewards, and not just our earthly rewards. 

The first part of the book discusses how Mike had to deal with infidelity in the church. A church minister had an affair, which devastated the whole church. Mike had to rebuild the church, but was not sure how the church will recover. He blamed God, but God gave him an answer: be yourself and let the church be itself. He learned that while he was helping others fulfill their godly purpose, he never thought about figuring out who he was. What was his godly purpose for his life?

I struggle with that question as well: What is God's purpose for my life? What is my ministry in the church. I have been going to my church for almost a year and still do not have a ministry. I love administration. I love helping folks. I already volunteered for vacation bible school, the carnival, and the halloween fest. I helped register people and provided directions. I think I ran a station at the carnival but that job was not for me. Got bored easily and it was either a two or four hour job. I don't think I am fit for an usher, greeter, or children's ministry. 

Glenn also discussed how some people equate being miserable to Christianity. They can not accept happiness when things are going too good. They live for the bad times because it tests their faith in God more. God is there for the good and the bad. People need to enjoy their lives now. Live their purpose now. You can't live for God, if you are dead (Pastor Mike discussed this in the vision for the church today. Love my pastor). 

God wants to provide guidance and direction for your life. God wants us to use our Godly Gifts. We all have special gifts. No one has every gift, which allows us to work together for the Kingdom, versus trying to do things alone. He wants us to enjoy living for him and fulfilling our purpose. Glenn discusses how living the gospel of yes does not limit us, but frees us to become who God wants us to be. It is ok to say no and let someone, who is better skilled, handle the job. 

Another part of the book, Iiked was Mike discussing how the churches, he grew up in, told him what not to do. No cussing, drinking, and smoking for example. He said we can't define our lives by what we oppose--it causes frustration and bitterness (and a lot of stress. i been there and still going through it). We can't attack the opposition always, but we can move towards the cross and live for God. Move towards life and away from death. Glenn discusses how we need to win people for Christ, instead of forcing them into Christianity. 

Other highlights from the book:

1. Live life with integrity. Yes means yes and no means no. If you cant do something, don't agree to do it. 
2. Saying yes to God  gives your life meaning and order. 
3. Paul discussed how Living for Christ is a yes. Everything else is disposable and a no
4. Fear and anger temporarily motivate people. Yet God's kingdom is eternal. 

Great quote:  "What makes life increasingly difficult is to know what your are against, without knowing what you are for" Being against something does not mean you are moving towards something positive. The book gave an example of being against divorce, yet you are not for marriage. Being against poverty does not mean you are helping the poor--another great example. I guess Mike is saying how we need to put action into our beliefs. We have to live for something--and that something needs to be God. It's like in a Sponge Bob episode I saw--where the sponge and the star wanted to Live like Larry. They wanted to emulate Larry the Lobster's life. Do what he did. Live in the moment, no matter the cost. We need to do the same for God. We need to live like God. Be like Christ. Live in the moment, fulfilling our purpose, no matter the cost. We need to say YES to God (and then do it. Put action to the words. Be committed, energized, happy, living for God).
