The Nabi 2.0

Posted on 21:29 by Unknown
Last week, I went to Wal-Mart for my normal household goods. I wrote a list, but that didn't do me any good. My mission: diapers, wipes, pull-ups, sippy cup with straw, soap, trash bags, diaper pail bags, printer paper, printer ink. I ended up with over 400 dollars worth of items, not including McDonalds. Normally, I spend between 200 and 300 dollars. The Diapers, wipes, and Depends are over 100 dollars.

Diapers: $20 dollars
Wipes: $8.00
Depends: 19.95 a bag times 3 to 5 bags, depending on what's in stock.
Diaper pail bags: 5.00
Trash bags: 5.00
Printer ink: 50 dollars
Printer Paper: 10 dollars
Sippy Cup: 6 dollars or less
Soap: 4 to 5 bottles. 1.28 each.

While I was in the Electronics Department, I asked to see their tablets, but not an Ipad. Even though I have a Mac, I am still a PC at heart. I knew wal-mart had android tablets, which will work with either google play or amazon. I could not get google play on the tablet but I did install Amazon app store.
Nabi 2 Tablet
Nabi 2 Tablet

I had two employees try to shift me to the Ipads, so I said point me to where I need to go, so I can look and price. I saw the nabi box, but no nabi. I asked if they had either the nabi jr or nabi 2 in stock. The employee said no, so I kept looking. I saw one nabi left. It cost me $194 dollars but I thought it could help in certain situations. I had to take Brad with me to WIC (women, infants, and children) the other day. Normally, I would not take him because he acts up and has meltdowns because of the long waits. He sat peacefully and watched videos, played games, and listened to music.

ON THE OTHER FREAKING HAND:

Brad does not want other people to touch it, even though I bought it for me, him, and his brother. I downloaded apps from Amazon, which will appeal to both of them. The nabi already comes with various apps and stuff.

Brad gets mad when it has to charge. Brad will take it off the charger and try to get it to come back on

I sat through a long melt-down today, where Brad hit me because I was showing Kalen how to say his ABCs. Kalen starts school next year and I want him to have a head start, especially on language, since his primary word is EAT. Brad was screaming, punching, hitting.

I have to find new ways to teach Brad how to share and handle his aggression. it will be a long, hard road, but I can't go through a meltdown over something, I thought the whole family can enjoy.

My Review:

Why I chose the book:

I wanted to review this book because I just started going back to church in 2012. I had not been previously since 2010 except once or twice. In two years, I had given birth to my two year old, in addition to having my oldest move from Georgia to Texas to live with me. I had to start going back to church, if not for me, for my children. I had to find the right church for my kids. I had three requirements: a nursery for my baby (who was almost 1 at the time); a special needs program for my oldest; and transportation to get to and from church. I don't want my kids with me in the sanctuary. They need to learn with people their own age and disability. Not to mention, they don't act right. Kalen likes to knock pens out my hand. Brad can't sit still. He also tries to run around. I have had issues with a church before that did not have a SPED program, and did not like Brad making a bunch of noise in church. When I had Brad for the weekend, I had to decide between staying at home or taking Brad to church and risk being asked to leave. I didn't even think about the pastor, but luckily, I found a great church with an excellent Pastor and assistant pastor. I googled churches but all the ones, who had special needs programs was too far away. I needed a church within reasonable distance: 30 minutes or less. I passed by my current church all the time, to go to Wal-Mart and a few other places. I have no idea what caused me to email the church, but I did. They met all my requirements and then some. The church is less than 5 minutes away from my house. Great special buddies program. The nursery program is awesome. The transportation leaders are amazing as well.

Back to the book:

In the book, Rufus and Ryan are going to church. The church is full of people, from the old to the young, including a stuffed monkey. The book teaches kids to be quiet and be still, which is something my nephew needs to do :-). When I went with my mother to church, my nephew crawled under the seats and just would not be still. In the book, Ryan listens, sings, and prays. The book will be a great read to the kids, grandkids, and other kids, in the neighborhood. Also great for church nurseries as well.

10 Tips for bringing a child to church

FlyBy Blog promotions provided an attachment with 10 tips for bringing a child to church. The tips included:

  1. Attend a child-friendly church. A child-friendly church invites children to attend worship services. It also may have children's services during worship. Find a church, which includes children in worship or has a separate program for children, so you can worship (Stacie's tip). Find a church, which will not be bothered by noise and commotion, with having younger children in the sanctuary.
  2. Bring your child to church on a day besides Sunday Morning. Make an appointment with the church office. Get a tour of the church. Find the Sunday School rooms, bathrooms, and sanctuary. Let your child sit in the pews, flip through the bibles, flip through the song books, etc. Explain the communion table, baptismal pool, and pulpit. For example, my church does communion on the first Sunday of each month. If the church is doing baptisms, it is done after the opening prayer of the 11 am service. 8 am service does not do baptisms. Both services perform communions.
  3. Take home a bulletin and go through the service at home, if applicable. Explain the times to sit, stand, kneel, sing, pray, and listen. If the Lord's prayer or other regular prayers are used, write down the words and let your child (ren) practice at home. Explain and Practice the tithes and offering as well.
  4. Play Let's go to church at home. Help your child be more comfortable in church. I remember playing church and school when I was a child.
  5. Read the bible and pray at home (which I need to do more of). Find an age-appropriate bible at home. Encourage your child to ask questions.
  6. Sit near an aisle, where you can make an exit, if needed. I definitely believe in this tip. I sit near the end of the aisles, just in case I get paged for either children. If your child has to go to the bathroom or gets overstimulated, it will be easier to walk out versus moving down a row of people.
  7. Be prepared with a worship note book and or bag. Bring pencils, colors, paper, coloring pages, etc for your child to play with.
  8. Teach basic church etiquette. Speak to people before and after services. Teach kids how to shake hands and greet other people. Show and let your child put away the hymn books and bibles after services, if applicable.
  9. Get to know the pastor. Introduce your kids to the pastor and participate in other church activities.
  10. Don't give up. Your child may not be comfortable in worship at first. Give it time. Attend church on a regular basis. I gave up with bringing Brad with me to church. I chose to stay at home instead. Now, I take him with me. He goes to his class, Kalen goes to his class, and I go to the sanctuary and my class.

Potty Boot Camp Book Review (Tomoson)

Posted on 22:55 by Unknown
I reviewed The Potty Boot Camp, in exchange for honest review from Tomoson.  I received the book on CD in the mail. I wanted to review the book because my oldest has issues with potty training. He has made progress in the last two years. He will pee more in the pot, but doing a # 2 is still hard work. My youngest also needs to learn how to use the toilet. If he can rip off his diaper for pee and poo, in addition to running around naked, then he can get potty trained.

The book is 14.99 on the website. Riffle also has a blog on the website as well.

 My Review:

The author discusses how to potty train a child within four weeks. The author discussed how there are plenty of books on potty training available. I have a few of them on how to potty train a special needs child. All the books offer various advice and techniques for training children, but you have to decide, which is best for you. The book provides a description of popular potty training techniques, such as the train in a day and the timer method. For Brad, I made him go to the potty every hour, then two hours. I had the potty training watch from pull-ups, which beeped when it was time to go. Brad hated that watch and ended up losing it. Eventually, he would go pee more on his own, than in the pull-ups.

Riffel uses a four-step method for potty training. The steps include:

  • Prep work. You take your child to the toilet. Your child may watch other people go. You may bring books and games into the bathroom. You explain proper bathroom etiquette to your child (handwashing, proper wiping and cleaning, and flushing for example). You may buy potty training videos and dolls, which pee and poo.
  • Boot Camp. Consider your language and tone during this phase. You want your child to be comfortable to go to the potty, instead of scared. Write down your expectations. Choose the right time to start potty training. and remember accidents will still happen. Don't make your child feel bad.
  • Reinforcement. Remind your child when he or she needs to go to the potty. Get a potty watch, like I used to have. If you don't have one, set the alarm on a clock or your phone.
  • Maintenance. Remind your child to go to the potty. Regression may occur during maintenance as well.

Next, the book includes an assessment to determine if your child is ready for potty training. Kalen met two out of the four points. Brad also met two out of the four determinants. The book also has a chapter on potty poop camp towards the end of the book. I need this chapter badly. Like I said, Brad will pee on the toilet sometimes, but when it comes to poo, it is in the pull-up, on the floor, or in the tub. He will come and get me to tell me he stink, which means he stinks or he made a mess somewhere and wants me to clean it up.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

This week as a special needs parent

Posted on 15:47 by Unknown
The past few weeks have been interesting, but this week takes the cake. Toss in a cycle and you have mama, filled with extra-emotions. I have not even exercised but once this week and broke my diet, a lot. Really hate to do the weigh-in later on tonight.

Anyway, Kalen has a global delay. He is delayed in walking, talking, and fine motor. Brad is autistic and adhd. Kalen is 2 and Brad is 12.

Kalen's ECI referred Kalen to a neurologist, who requested an EEG, EKG, audiology, and genetics testing. Kalen did excellent in Audiology. He has perfect hearing, even though he lost interest during the examination. Throwing a two-year old in an audio booth, with toys, is trouble lol.

So, this was my week--this week.

Monday:

Kalen had Physical Therapy. He did excellent. Ms. Sandy even had him practicing outside on the sidewalk. He walked, with one finger holding Sandy, from the sidewalk to the house and back. She said with his progress (if he continues like he is doing), he may be walking by Thanksgiving.

Tuesday:

I had an eye doctor appointment to replace my glasses. I did an exam and picked out my new thin, black frames. Why I am replacing them? My wonderful son, Kalen, broke off both handles. I went to the dollar store, bought some reading glasses, installed new handles on my glasses, he broke those off too, along with the brackets.

Later that day, Kalen had early childhood intervention. He did excellent. He played with the toys. It was also a sad day. It was Lisa's last day of working with Kalen. Everyone had to re-apply for their jobs. Lisa chose not to re-apply, so she can focus on school. She also mentioned the department lost at least 10 other people (those, who chose not to re-apply and terminations). This means over 300 kids do not have a therapist. The week before Lisa had told me to go on an advocate-emailing spree to get a new therapist for Kalen. Luckily, Lisa found him one or one was assigned to him, since he needs help with transitioning. Kalen will conclude both ECI and PT through Keep Pace in May. He also starts school in May (Head Start and a school for developmental disabilities). I will miss Lisa. She has worked with Kalen since he was 1 years old.

This was not supposed to been an ECI day, but Lisa is having surgery, I think today, and wanted to see Kalen.

Wednesday:

Brad had an new pediatric appointment at LBJ hospital. The appointment was at 12:45. The appointment lady told me to be there an hour early. I got there around 10:30. My mother dropped us off. After navigating the hospital, we finally found the pediatric clinic. I signed in. The registration lady said I was early. (No, for real). I sat down. My kids, my lovely kids, was fighting with each other. Pushing the stroller. and hungry. I fed them before leaving the house. I went to the vending machines on another floor, where the machine was fancy. The machine did not accept dimes, nickels, or pennies.

I also gave Brad his risperidone to calm him down BEFORE leaving the house. I gave him a smaller dosage of Melatonin to calm him down. None of it worked. Brad was good until they brought him back to take his vitals. The nice nurse, Ms. Wesley wanted Brad to get on the scale. This meant taking off his shoes and backpack. He screamed a loud, piercing scream. Would not cooperate. Finally when Ms. Wesley left the room, Brad took off his shoes, took off his backpack, stood on the scale, and another nurse ran quickly into the room, to get his weight. He also let her take his height.

We was getting ready to go into another waiting room, when another nurse said the room was ready. The children tore up paperwork out my purse, knocked over stuff in my purse, was screaming, hollering, fighting again. The dr, a resident came in. He asked me a bunch of questions. He did not access Brad at all, except his heart. On a good note, Brad has lab work next week (have to change the appointment. Overbooked myself accidently), will get a referral to a dentist, and will get a referral to a autism clinic.

Then, had to wait over an hour for my mother to pick us back up. Brad was starting to act up badly. He laid in the middle of the floor, by the sliding doors. He banged on the windows. Kalen slept the whole time during the middle of this. We was at the hospital from 1030 am to 430 pm. Too long if you ask me, especially for a mama, dealing with Aunt flo, and two special needs kids.

Thursday:

Kalen had an MRI and EEG scheduled at Texas Children's. I had no sleep since I had to get up before 5 am to get to the hospital at 6 am. I had to sign him in at one building, then walk to another room for vitals, then go to another building for the actual test. While waiting, I went to get something to eat. I had no idea how to get back. I knew what building he was in and what floor. Everyone I had asked did not know where radiology was. I ended up walking past the building I needed back to pediatric radiology registration to ask where I needed to go. I finally found my baby. Within minutes of me coming back, Kalen was brought into recovery, where they woke him up quick. Yay me. Kalen's EEG was in an hour. I wanted him to stay sleep. I found my way to the EEG room. Same building, Express elevator, 21st floor. Signed him in. Kalen went from waking up from MRI to active baby. He was crawling. He was climbing. He was trying to walk. He was pushing the stroller.

The lady in the EEG waiting room said the EEG person could take me an hour early since she had no one back there. So on, we went to the EEG room. It was made for sleeping. A big sofa bed and soft cushiony chairs for sitting and sleeping for the parents/guardians. The tech wanted Kalen to go back to sleep. Kalen was not having that. I presented him a boobie and between crying, screaming, and trying to unplug the wires, Kalen and I both went to sleep. Eventually, the tech came back into the room, woke me up, and told me to wake Kalen up. Kalen never woke up until I got home 2-3 hours later. The poor lady flashed lights in his face, called his name, flashed more lights in his face, and Kalen refused to stir. His hands moved. his body moved, but his eyes said, hey man, he is tired, leave him be lol.

I got home and crashed. My internet was down. Didn't feel like checking my email from the phone. I was tired. I said, screw it, and went to sleep.

Friday:

No therapies for any child today. I woke up about 10-ish. I been trying to clean all day long.  I got some work done. My youngest done pulled my mirror off the back of the closet door, with the door screws as well. He also left me a nice surprise when I went to do laundry. I put him in his crib, with the bed made. Came back, to see a naked baby, with all the bedding pulled off, except the bottom sheet.

Monday, Brad has a psych appointment. Wednesday, Kalen has an ECG appointment. Let's get next week started.

Back to School Campaign (Madame Media Deals)

Posted on 13:23 by Unknown

I participated in the back to school campaign from Madame Deals Media. The BTS campaign was also sponsored by Campus Book Rentals.

Campus Book Rentals is a company that offers students up to 90% off their textbooks! It not only allows students to save money, it helps students make money by providing services for students to rent out their textbooks to other students. Campus Book Rentals has been around since 2007, and continues to help students live a more affordable life. Campus Book Rentals is proud to sponsor such an amazing pay it forward event!

I received $25 dollars on my PayPal Card (love my paypal card) to purchase supplies. I bought my supplies yesterday from my favorite store, HEB, making sure not to go over because my pay pal card, only had $34 dollars. I can go over but not too much over.

My costs of Items:

Scissors: 1.97
Pencils .97
Pink Eraser .59
Pens (2 packs) 1.98
Crayola Crayons (2 packs) 1.00
Highlighters .99
Pencil Pouch 2.45

Water colors 1.08
Color Pencils. 50
School Glue .50
Clear, plastic folders (3) 1.50
Notebook. College ruled paper. (2) .40
Notebook Wide ruled Paper (2): .40
Note book .20
College Ruled paper .82
Wide Ruled paper .82
Multi method primary paper 1.79
Backpack $5
Total: $24.91 before Taxes.

I am not sure what I saved on supplies, since I bought groceries too. All of it was on the same receipt. I saved 19.76 total but not sure how much was groceries and how much was school supplies. I do know that supplies at the grocery store was cheaper than the supplies I got at Wal-Mart last week.

My idea for giving away the supplies:

I don't go anywhere, except Church, the store, and appointments for the kids, but wanted to participate in the campaign. The best place I can help a child, without going through too much trouble to get there (since I have no car) is church.

When I went to church on August 4th, I discussed this campaign with Brad's special needs teacher. Kim should know of one kid, who needs supplies. If she did not, I would have spoken to the director of the children's department. For me, when I have something to give away, I think of the church first or craigslist. Since joining my church a year ago, I have given baby food, clothing, ipad cases, formula, etc, without expecting anything in return. My family also has been blessed with clothes from the church. I love a good hand-me down. Shoot, I love a bad hand-me-down, because I can alter it or use it for cleaning or arts and crafts (when I do them. Bought some tye dye supplies from WallyWorld recently, but have not used them yet).

The Special Needs Class stuck out because sometimes, SPED Parents, are low on funds. I know I am, but my kids got everything they need for the month. Ms. Kim said bring the backpack filled with supplies on Sunday and we will give it to a random kid in Brad's class. Yay, that was a good idea.

Now sometimes when you get a good idea, it is best to keep that good idea to yourself. As I mentioned on Perfect Chaos, A relative wanted me to keep the supplies for my kids, even though they don't need them. I bought Brad a few supplies during the first week of August. I also buy supplies as needed. From what I learnt, since Brad moved to Texas, do not buy supplies until the teacher or assignment specifically asks for them. In addition to sometimes the SPED classes gets a modified list. After all, my child do not need to work with sharp scissors, let alone need a pen or highlighter to do his work. Brad is still in that crayon, marker, and glue stage. Kalen starts school next year, but will be in pre-k for developmental disabilities plus head start. Anyway, on Sunday, I gave the bag of supplies, plus two brand new toothbrushes to Brad's teacher at church. I don't know who ended up with the bag, but I was glad to help.

Reading Kingdom Review (Tomoson)

Posted on 03:16 by Unknown
Effective Online Reading Programs For Kids

I reviewed Reading Kingdom, in exchange for honest review from Tomoson. I received a one-year membership for participation. Reading Kingdom is an online program, which teaches children how to read and write to a third grade level. The program was based on Dr. Marion Blank, Columbia University, who is a renown expert on reading and language development. The website is designed more for kids 4 to 10.

I wanted to review the product for my oldest son. He loves websites such as ABC Mouse, Zac Browser, and StarFall. Brad is special needs. He was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD at an early age. He has made progress over the years, but still struggles with the basics such as reading, writing, comprehension, numbers, and the ABCs. He knows 1, A, and B, but either does not know or refuses to say any other letters and numbers. Brad can recognize words, but can not read or write.  I wanted to try out Reading Kingdom to see if he can make progress. Brad also does not have any speech therapy for the summer. The program is very visual and provides voice instructions and help.  I knew it would take some work because it required a lot of direct supervision and hand over hand work. Sometimes it required showing him exactly what to do. One of my biggest challenges was getting him to pay attention and participate, but I knew that beforehand. Brad requires direct supervision and a lot of patience to get him to try a new game or product or website. I knew I was not going to see progress immediately. The first challenges was to get him to participate in the exercises. It took a few days before he started helping me click versus hand over hand. Any progress is better than no progress.

The website is free to sign up and you get a 30 day trial. Once enrolled, your child can take an assessment to determine which level to begin on. You can track your child (ren's) progress by name. You also can view what activities your child(ren) have completed. The program is more designed for kids, who work more independently. The exercises are simple to do. If your child is struggling, the program will give helpful visual instructions and help. Reading Kingdom also works on iPads.

Next, you have the option of using the physical keyboard or an on-screen keyboard. I used both to see which would work best with Brad. Parents or guardians also can send a reader report to their email. The report shows your child (ren's) progress in seeing sequences and letter land (if your child is on this level). It also shows progress in the overall program. Parents and guardians also can increase or decrease the response time. Finally, kids can take keyboard and mouse lessons, if they need additional training.  I am still working with Brad in Reading Kingdom.

The price for the program for one reader is 19.99 month or $199.99 year. Each additional reader is 9.99 month or $99.99 a year. The website also sells educational books as well.

Schlitterbahn (toddlers and tweens in two from a special needs perspective). US Family bloggers

Posted on 02:11 by Unknown

I am participating in a campaign by US Family Bloggers. I received free tickets, in exchange for posting about the Schlitterbahn. This week's topic is Toddlers and Tweens in Tow.

http://www.schlitterbahn.com/bloggers
  • The promo code for the 2 day $7 Off discount is 299000334
  • The promo code for the $5 off discount is 299000335
  • Valid at ALL Texas Schlitterbahn Parks!

I got the tickets in the mail today. I told my mother, simply because we need a ride there, with the extra ticket for her. Her response: She wants to take my niece, great niece, nephew, and herself instead, of Stacie and her boys, not knowing the babies (my youngest and great niece) are free. Her main reason was it was a water park and I will not let my kids go near the water, which is correct. Last week, they went to someplace called Kemah. Kemah's water area is too close to a real ocean (which is a safety issue, if Brad decides to jump off the edge during a meltdown). The folks asked me to go (at the last minute) hoping I would say no. I like to find places to keep my kids included so they can have fun too. So, my mission is to find something for special needs kids to do at the Schlitterbahn. So, first I went to the water park website for Galveston, Texas.

THINGS I LIKED:
  • You can bring in your own food
  • Free parking
  • Free life jackets and inner tubes, based on availability. Can bring in your own personal life jacket.
  • Super Splash Cash--wrist watch which is loaded with money you need to spend in the park, without carrying your wallet or purse.

ATTRACTIONS I LIKED:
  • Wasserfest Kids area: The attraction offers low speed and shallow water. I also liked how the website said the area is more for supervised youngsters, the disabled, and partially health limited guests
  • Tiki Tikes features kiddie slides in a shallow water. The area also has water sprays.

Overwhelmed

Posted on 23:32 by Unknown
Sometimes I feel overwhelmed--between the blog and the kids and life itself. Sometimes I feel like I put too much on my self, thinking I can do it, when sometimes I can not (which is why I write everything down now in a document, either on paper or on google drive).

Today, has been one of those days. I did a book blast, which freed me from posting on the blog, but I still had work to do behind the scenes. The kids acted extra today. Brad tried to break my door again because I took the remote from him because he kept messing with his brother. The hole behind my door has gotten a little bigger. My door is also cracked at the top, thanks to another meltdown.

I also tried to get him to try some tea for review. He did not want to try it. Luckily, he is sleep now. Last nite, even with 6 mls of melatonin in his system, Brad did not want to go to sleep. He fell asleep around 5 or 6 am. I know because I was woke as well. He also takes clonindine. I cant find my pill crusher (need an assistant to help me sort my things). Getting him to swallow a pill is ridiculous. You have to put the pill in his mouth, close it. add water, close the mouth, and make him swallow. otherwise, he will spit the pill out and I have to start over.

I am also getting tired of him peeing in my bed. He broke his bed months ago. I am trying to find a good one for him. Something an Autistic, ADHD, child can not break. He had a futon, but broke the frame. Ordered new screws and he still broke the frame. The frame is fine now, but now in the game room. The mattress on the other hand, Brad peed through it. Opened it up, it was blue jean material. His urine disintegrated it. So, eventually, he works his way back into my bed. I got waterproof mattress pads and covers, plus regular ones, and he still finds a way to pee in my bed. Last night, since he refused to sleep, I made him go potty every 30 or so minutes. My bed was dry in the morning. Yay. I washed my bedding two extra times, two days ago, because Brad kept peeing. Not sure, if he senses he is wet or stinky or wants to lay in his own urine. Sometimes, he will tell me if he is stinky. Sometimes he goes to the potty and pee. Yay me.

Kalen, though he can't walk, can climb into stuff and throw it out, pour it out, eat it up, or put it in his mouth. My poor toothbrush, he found in my purse and decided he wanted to use it. Good job, but use your own toothbrush lol. He knocked over books, paper, and bags. I had to get rid of my mini bookcase, because Kalen keeps knocking everything over. I gave it to my niece. I need something taller and more sturdier. The book case was left with nothing but my Carnival Plastic Ship on a stick and the phone books.

I also need my laptop fixed. Tired of Brad's desktop. Good for doing work, but I miss Microsoft office. I also can't find the book i am working on. I know i saved a back-up copy, but it is not on Google Drive. Could be on a flash drive, but not sure which one. I have gotten quotes, but they all was high--for a simple consultation.

Yay Speech Therapy

Posted on 20:05 by Unknown
Brad has been receiving in-person speech therapy since April. The school decided to finally give me what I asked for in September for April. I just happened to check the house voicemail and saw the message. For some reason, Brad's home school never calls my cell first, which is the primary number. Brad did good at first, but lately...he can do a good 20 minutes, 25 minutes some days, and other days, he acts a fool and does 10 to 15 minutes of therapy.

Jose is a good therapist. He brings the ipad and puzzles. He works with Brad, but Brad does not always work with him. The best part is Jose is a strong male. This man will chase Brad down and help with meltdowns and temper tantrums. Because of this, I can not just clean the front room anymore. I have to clean the living room, front room, kitchen, wash room, and sweep the steps, because Brad will run everywhere, including upstairs and out the back door.

I have no idea how to get Brad to stay in the front room and work consistently for 20 or more minutes. He has the same issues with his online speech therapist. Some days good, some days bad. I am about to find that website on making homemade weighted jackets or vests for Brad.

Yesterday, I forgot Jose comes on Mondays (used to be Tuesdays and Thursdays), now it's Mondays and Tuesdays. He texted and said he will change the time to 12, but I assumed it was Tuesday. Jose showed up. I got Brad dressed quick. Sent him downstairs. I got myself dressed and the baby dressed, while listening and peeking in the front room from the top and side of the steps. Brad did excellent the 10 minutes I wasn't directly in the room with him. Then, BOOOMM, I heard footsteps and Brad ran into the bedroom. His snack for excellent participation went to Kalen and Riah (my great niece).

How would you get a 12 year old, Autistic, ADHD, child to sit still during therapy? Any suggestions will be taken. Brad is very strong and solid as well, and I can not pick him up and lift him anymore. Too much work on my back.

What is one thing you completely dislike and why?

This is a hard question. There are a lot of things, which I dislike. People, who pick on special needs kids. Lateness. People, touching my stuff. changing poopy diapers. annoying relatives. weed. dark liquor. apple products. trying to explain celibacy.

But for today, I will focus on kids, who pee in my bed, leaving me to clean my bedding, every other day. I have a nice bed. I splurged on the bed--a nice tempurpedic because I was having back problems. I got the bed in 2011, shortly after giving birth to the youngest and having my tubes tied.  Wish I had gotten mattress covers right away because there was an ink stain. but anyway, currently I have 2 plastic waterproof covers; 2 waterproof mattress pads, 1 non waterproof mattress pad, and a pillow top cover. not to mention, the sheets, blankets, and pillows.

Somehow, someway, my oldest (Autistic, ADHD, not fully potty trained) finds a way to pee in my bed on a regular basis. My son broke his bed and will sleep anywhere, including my bed. (floor, sofa, etc). My youngest (developmentally delayed) also has a habit of ripping off his diapers (yay me).  Nothing like waking up to the smell of fresh pee and/or rolling over and getting wet. I have a lot of bedding to wash. Of course, I still have to find a way to keep both kids off the bed, until the bedding is dried and the bed is re-made. This requires, lifting the bed up, and putting it against the wall, until everything is washed and dried.

In the before covers and pad days, I had to literally bleach my mattress. I had to take everything off, including the zippered covers on the mattress. Wash and dry it all. Then, spray the foam mattress directly with clorox to kill the urine smell. I was glad when I walked into Family dollar and saw the plastic mattress pads for $4 dollars each. I am on my second one, since my youngest tore part of the elastic off the first one, but $ 4 is a good deal to keep the mattress pee free. I still use the first one though.

Tales of the Defended Ones Book Review

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
I reviewed Tales of the Defended Ones, in exchange for honest review from Litfuse. The book was written by Beth Guckenburger and published by Standard Publishing. I received a paperback version of the book.

About the book (From Litfuse's website)

Ben and Joseph lose their mothers, but find a family looking just for them. Antonio is rescued from what seems like a hopeless situation. Caitlyn dares to trust that truth will set her free. Jorani is delivered from slavery into the arms of grace.

Follow these real-life stories as they take you on a journey to foreign places and extreme struggles. Travel through their challenges and see the hand of the great Storyweaver – our Defender God shielding and defending the defenseless in the amazing ways only he can. These are the tales of the ones left wounded and weak-ones made whole and strong . .

About the author (From Litfuse's website: )

Beth Guckenberger and her husband, Todd, are the founders of Back2Back Ministries which communicates a lifestyle of service by sharing the love of Christ and serving God through service to others. Guckenberger travels and speaks regularly at women’s and missions conferences, as well as youth gatherings and church services. In addition to her children’s releases in the Storyweaver series, Guckenberger has written two mission-minded books. She has also partnered with Standard Publishing on the mission content in its 2013 VBS program. The Guckenberger family lives and serves in Monterrey, Mexico

My Review:

I started reading the book today, uninterrupted for about an hour or so. I was halfway through the book before I realized it. The book talked about God's love through adoptions and mission work. The children faced real struggles at an early age. Death of parents and abuse was covered in the first three stories. I chose the book because I loved the description. I am also reviewing more Christian-based books. I wasn't sure of the book at first, but I am glad I was selected for the blog tour I was completely moved by the time, I got to Antonio's story. Ben and Joseph's story was first. They was adopted from Africa. Ben's mother had tuberculosis. Ben also was malnourished. Joseph's mother was pregnant and worked for an elderly lady. She went into labor, headed to a clinic to deliver the baby, and died during child birth. She left Joseph with her employer, but after a week of not hearing from Joseph's mama, the employer took Joseph to the orphanage. Both boys were adopted by the same family

My emotions took a turn for the worse, when I read Antonio's story next. I was in tears. Antonio lived in Mexico. He had epilepsy (with seizures). I used to have seizures, in addition to both of my sons having seizures (Brad grew out of his, Kalen still has them). Antonio's mother had no support because people avoided her. Antonio was also kicked out of school because his teacher could not handle his disorder. His father was not around much--then he died. His mother was also facing cancer. She was worried that when she died, no one would care for her son. She also thought about taking Antonio to heaven with her. An neighbor noticed Antonio and called a case worker. The case worker called a home, which took in kids, no one else wanted--especially those with mental and physical disabilities. I cried when I read how the mother wanted to take Antonio to heaven with her because no one wanted to care for her child. As a mother of special needs children, I was hurt, sad, and definitely empathetic. I hope that when I die, my kids will not be split up and will have a happy home. My family offers little support and their father offers little support.

Next, I read the story of Caitlyn. She was bullied at school. She was being abused, but protective of her mother. Behavioral problems also occurred. She did not want to be taken away from her mother. Her mother's boyfriend was beating her. Her mother was pregnant and on drugs. Her brother was born with drugs in his system. Her brother was taken away, when he was born because of the addiction. both siblings were adopted by the same family.

Finally, the book talked about Jorani. Jorani, who was a girl, lived in Cambodia, in a river village. Her parents died in a traffic accident, months prior. She and her sisters lived with Grandma, who was ailing, and Jorani had to help care for the younger ones. She took on small jobs to help feed her siblings. Jourani heard about a jobs, in the city; went to inquire about one, and he started her into child slavery. When she was no longer useful, she was homeless. Her granny started feeling better and started searching for her granddaughter. Jourani's story had a beautiful ending.

At the end of each story, the author provided a space for you to journal your thoughts and answer a question. This would be great for small group studies. The book is also written in easy-to-understand language. This book was a quick read because I was so engrossed in the story. The author also provides an interview with Joseph and Ben, at the end of the book.

I want to date, go out, have a life, and not always involve the kids

Posted on 22:01 by Unknown
Another rant from a special needs parent: Some things you may have heard before

I want to date, go  out, and have a life, and not always with the kids. I love my kids, yes I do, but some days, I need a break. I don't have babysitters because I do not trust too many people with my special ones. I don't know too many real-life people, who do not voice their diverse, irritating opinion about my babies.

  1. Why does Brad act that way?
  2. Brad just needs a whipping and his autism will go away?
  3. You need to watch your kids 24 hours a day. You don't need sleep. Your kids are too bad.
  4. I hope Kalen does not turn out like Brad.
  5. I hope Kalen will be the normal one
  6. When you die, I am sending Brad back to his father and keeping Kalen.
  7. When is Brad going back to live with Brad Sr.
  8. I can't keep Brad because he not potty trained. He will pee on the couch (even wearing a pull-up). But Can I keep Kalen (who wears diapers)
  9. If only you would, then Brad or Kalen would not ________________________
  10. Put Brad on additional medications, which will make him a zombie or sleep all day, to make my life (not Stacie's) easier.

I hear people, who want to date me, ask When do you get time for yourself? When do you get a break? The question is old. The question irritates me because my kids are with me most of the time. If I sleep, I have two kids in my bed. If I go to the bathroom, a kid or two is knocking on the door. Maybe, a kid is in his bouncer in the bathroom with me to protect him from his big brother.

There is a nursery and SPED class at church though, but still I check the pager consistently to see if the kids are acting up.

I don't want to have sex yet. I do not drink a lot. My life is about the kids. I just want time to think, to breathe, to socialize.

Then, you have to consider things have changed. I used to have one kid, who stayed with his father. I got him on some weekends. I did not get him all the time. Didn't want to inconvenience anyone. Didn't want Brad to feel unwelcome. I also did not feel I could offer Brad all he needs. Thought since he was a boy, his father could control, discipline, and teach him manly things.

Since I got Brad full-time again, in 2011, I learned Brad really did need me. Some things I have taught him, I wish I taught him before, like peeing and showering and brushing his teeth. If it wasn't for Kalen being born, I would never have appreciated Brad more. I had conflicting thoughts during the pregnancy. Could I love this child? Will he be special needs? When will I see Brad again? Will I have a full-term pregnancy? I also had thoughts about my first two miscarriages, which consumed me.

Eventually, I decided that I wanted a child, a boy child, who will live. I didn't care if he was 5 armed, 30 fingers, and green. I wanted my baby. I wanted my oldest son. I did not, never, ever, ever, want another miscarriage again. and after Kalen was born, I got fixed. I had a new appreciation for the unborn male child and my oldest child. Anything was better than another miscarry. Anything was better than losing a baby, legs propped up, in a hospital alone.

I love my kids. I am responsible for my kids. I will cuss and fuss and fight and kill for my chillens. Definitely a crazy parent, with anger and other un-diagnosed mental issues.

How Katie got a Voice

Posted on 21:17 by Unknown
I read How Katie got a voice, in exchange for honest review. The book was written by Patricia L. Mervine and published by Trafford Publishing. I received a print edition of the book a few days ago, and read it in one sitting. The book is excellent.

I chose the book because I felt a connection to Katie. I have two special needs children. My oldest, for those, who don't know, has ADHD and Autism. My youngest has developmental delays.

Katie is disabled (wheelchair bound) and can not speak. Katie relies on her attendant to help her in the classroom. She also uses a speak book, which allows her to use her eyes to communicate with her assistant. She enrolls at Cherry Street school, where everyone has a cool nickname. The book is narrated by Miguel, who gives out the nicknames to most of the school, including the principal, teacher, and janitor. With a little help from the speech therapist, Ms. Lips, Katie learns new ways to communicate, and earns a nickname. Ms. Lips and Katie, work together to surprise the classroom.

Definitely enjoyed the book because people have different methods of communication. Not everyone can traditionally speak. Brad can speak, but he can also point, grunt, and knows a few signs. Kalen also does not speak except his one word. therapist is attempting to teach him sign language. The book will be a great read for the special needs community (parents, siblings, speech therapists) and can be used to teach acceptance, inclusion, and disability etiquette. The last few pages in the book, after the story ends, lists disability etiquette. Some tips include:

  1. Do not stare and/or ignore people with disabilities.
  2. Do not shout or speak to the disabled, like they are younger or not as smart as you.
  3. When a disabled person has an aide, speak to the person, not the aide. If you talk to the aide, don't ignore the disabled person, as if he or she is not there.
  4. Don't pet service pets without permission. They are performing a service and should not be distracted or disturbed.
  5. Do not touch or play with any assisted technology devices.
  6. Don't ask about their condition unless they bring up the subject.
  7. Be patient.
  8. Focus on the person, not the disability.
I also attached a wonderful video, from Patricia's website.

Why was I blessed with two special needs children?

Posted on 13:22 by Unknown

Why Was I blessed with two special needs children:

I been asking myself this question, since Brad was diagnosed. Why was I chosen to handle this task. I thought again about this question in church today, while Dr. Walter Larimore was speaking. I was not blessed with two normal kids or 1 normal and 1 special needs kids. I was blessed with a 12 year old, Autistic, ADHD, sensory issues, currently pre-pubescent child. I was also blessed with a 20 month old, no talking, no walking, fine motor delays child. These are the thoughts I jotted down.

I am not normal.  I do not understand normal people. I am an outcast. I know what it is like to be excluded. I like things in a certain order, in a certain way, at certain times. I don't like extra disruptions (maybe I got ADHD too). My mind wanders through millions of thoughts daily. I am a misunderstood, creative soul.

I don't know exactly why God blessed me with my boys. I was the child (and adult), who never thought about having kids. I did not want them, yet I had four pregnancies and two live births. Kids irritated me immensely. Some talk too much. I am a loner, an introvert. Not a people person.

I had to learn to love and protect my babies, despite my non-existent maternal instinct I used to have. In fact, people, who have multiple kids, and seem to have a balance on life, are my heroes. I admire you. Here is my salute.

Dr. Larimore discussed how God gave special parents a gift--which we need to unwrap. We need to love, appreciate, and teach our special kids. We also need to teach them about God and help them discover their talents. The kids can also teach me patience, understanding, love, sympathy, caring, appreciation, hope, and joy. The kids can also teach me not to take life too seriously.

Stains on the floor will happen. Even immediately after I clean the floor. One of my kids will pee or spill food or juice on the floor.

My room will not stay mostly clean.

I will always find food hidden behind bookcases, cribs, beds, computers, tv stands, etc.

I may never get a full night's sleep.

I will spend multiple days per month in therapies and dr.'s offices, with no energy in the tank.

I will be changing diapers for a long, long, time.

I may have to give up control over things.

Getting angry at the kids and myself DOES NOT help.

1/20/13. Dr. Walter Larimore

Posted on 13:00 by Unknown

Today at Fallbrook Church, the church invited Dr. Walter Larimore to speak today. He is an ADHD specialist. Some things I learned today include: (regular service and Sunday school notes combined)

  1. Some kids have been painted over with a mask. Keeps you from seeing who they really are.
  2. ADHD kids have multi-track cognition
  3. ADHD kids have awareness of surroundings
  4. ADHD kids search for stimulation
  5. ADHD is not a learning disorder. It is not a myth. It is not caused by bad parenting.
  6. ADHD kids are not retarded or lazy.
  7. ADHD does not mean disaster.
  8. The true measure of success occurs when your kids find their passion.

5 Tips for handling ADHD children:
  1. Put God First- People run to the internet, books, and other people first, but don't consider allowing God to tell you what tod do. Psalms 50:15 says to Call on God in times of trouble and God will deliver you.
  2. Love your children unconditionally. Your child is a gift from God. Your kids are filled with energy, spontaneous, alert to changes, or even have a novel approach to problem solving.
  3. Get right diagnosis and educate self. Get the right diagnosis. Some doctors are quick to diagnose children with ADHD and other behavioral issues. Then, educate self on your children's issues.
  4. Seek wise counsel: Seek out other parents. Learn from each other. Share successes and mistakes. Pray for each other. Seek out counseling from psychologists, if needed.
  5. Pick a coach to help you: Pick a coach for guidance and information. My first coaches were Saffiyah and Crystal (Rest in Peace). Saffy and Crystal were the first Autistic parents I met. I thought I was alone in this. Saffy and Crystal have been a tremendous help over the years.
Balanced Parenting: In Sunday School, Larimore presented this model of parenting

ABC                                                                                                                           D
___________________________________________________________________________

                                                                   /\

A-Affirmation: Be the best cheerleader for your kids. This requires both parents. If both parents are not available, find good people to influence your children

B-Blameless Love-Love your children unconditionally. They do not need to earn your love

C-Connection: Develop a connection with your kids. Spend quality time with them. Consider quantity of time as well. There is no quality without quantity. The children need a connection with three people:
  1. Parents
  2. Friends
  3. Creator
D-Demandingness. Discipline. ADHD kids need discipline. structure. discipleship. Don't use the 1-2-3 method because Kids will learn they do not have to stop until you count to three.

Parents, who are ABC parents, are golden retriever parents. They want to be the kids friends. They bribe the children. Parents, who are D parents can be too authoritarian, militaristic. Grizzly Bears. Parents need to strive to find balance. Find a support group. Get away from time to time to recharge, without the kids. Find a babysitter and take a night out. Develop a closer relationship with God.

Two Poops

Posted on 07:25 by Unknown

Yesterday, Brad took a poo in the toilet. I was eating downstairs and Brad said he stink. Got upstairs and there was no poo on him. Checked the floors but no poo. The poo was in the toilet. Yay. Hooray. He also did another poo in the toilet this morning. Now, I need to teach him how to wipe himself and how to dry his self off after a bath. Been woke up twice this morning for those two issues.
Everything is a work in progress. Last year, Brad would not bathe or shower without assistance. He mastered that, but still did not like soap. Some days he use soap and others he do not. Still working on that one. He also needs to learn to dry off. Brad will bathe on his own without telling anyone. So, I have been woke up plenty of times because he took at bath at 3 am and needs to be dried off. Yay me. I hope he will be fully potty trained and have decent bathroom skills (wiping, washing hands, brushing teeth, using soap).
