Return to Me Book Review, Blog Tour, and Giveaway (Litfuse)

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown
I read Return to Me (The Restoration Chronicles Book #1), in exchange for honest review from Litfuse. The book was written by Lynn Austin and published by Bethany House. I received a paperback copy of the book. This post contains an Amazon affiliate link.

About the Book:(provided from Media Kit)

After decades of exile, the prophesies are coming true---King Cyrus has declared the Jews may return to Jerusalem. Iddo, a priest, is sure this is a sign of God's renewed favor. For too long they've remained in Babylon, and many, including Iddo's sons, are losing the faith that sets them apart. And so only a few choose toleave everything toreturn---return to their home and their God.

Nothing about their journey to the Promised Land is easy. As hardships mount, even the faithful, like Iddo's beloved wife, Dinah, question the sacrifice of following God's leading. Zechariah, Iddo's oldest grandson, feels torn between his grandfather's ancient beliefs and the family they left behind. But one life-changing encounter with the Holy One gives him insight that will change Zechariah---and history---forever.

Bringing the Old Testament to vibrant life, Return to Me tells the compelling story of two men living by faith in the midst of doubt, the women who love them, and the faithful remnant struggling to rebuild their lives in obedience to the God who beckons them home.

About the Author: (From Media Kit)

Bestselling author Lynn Austin has sold more than one million copies of her books worldwide. She is an eight-time Christy Award winner for her historical novels, as well as a popular speaker at retreats and conventions. Lynn and her husband have raised three children and live near Chicago.

My Review:

One of the reasons I chose the book was because of the description. The book is also based in biblical times. The book starts off with Daniel, 82 years old, been summoned to the palace by Nebuchadnezzar's grandson, Belshazzar to help determine the meaning of mysterious writing on the wall. The grandson summoned all of the mystical people, but had no success. This sounds similar in the bible, when Nebuchadnezzar summoned Daniel to translate a dream or was it Pharoah and Joseph. Babylon was falling quickly and people needed to change their ways.

The book then moves into Iddo, a priest,  and his wife, Dinah. Something has happened in the city and a death has occurred. God's hand is in the midst of the crisis. Babylon is falling and no one is safe. The Jews have a desire to move back into the promised land. 70 years of exile is almost up. Some people's faith is shattered because of the long wait. Some have turned to false gods and astrology for answers, instead of God.

The book was well-written and moved at a decent speed. It combines biblical history with fiction, similar to the Left Behind series  by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. or the Babylon Rising series by Tim LaHaye and his co-authors.

Bumper wipe clean activities (Kregel Blog Tours)

Posted on 19:52 by Unknown

I reviewed Bumper Wipe Clean Activities , in exchange for review from Kregel Blog Tours. This post contains affiliate images and links from Amazon.  The book was written by Juliet David and illustrated by Marie Allen. The book was published by Candle Books. Bumper Wipe Clean activities is an Christian activity book, which kids can use in the car. Every page can be used with dry-erase markers or crayons.

The activities include:

  • Connect the dots
  • Spot the mistakes
  • Matching pairs
  • Hidden Objects
  • Drawing
  • Mazes
  • Tracing numbers
Each page also represents a story in the bible, such as an Angel is telling Mary she will have a baby and then your child can trace over the words, Angel. Another puzzle is a maze, where Jesus is taking a ride through Jerusalem and needs to know the right path to take.

The book provides endless fun. When your kids are through with an activity, they can wipe it clean and start over. My kids, nieces, and nephews loved the book. The book is available on Amazon for 9.78 and is prime eligible.

The matrix and the alice books book review, tour, and giveaway by Voicu Mihnea Simandan (Charisma Bloggers).

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

I read the Matrix and Alice books by Voicu Mihnea Simandan, in exchange for honest review for Charisma Media/Charisma Bloggers.

About the book: (From media kit).

The Matrix and the Alice Books presents aspects of intertextuality in three primary sources: the script of the motion picture The Matrix written by directors Andy and Larry Wachowski, and the books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. Intertextuality is a set of relations with other texts, which can include direct quotations, allusions, literary conventions, imitation, parody and unconscious sources amongst others. In The Matrix there are few explicit references to Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

This book by Voicu Mihnea Simandan presents both the explicit references and the less direct ones, giving evidence from primary and secondary sources. In doing so, it makes use of a literary construction developed from GĂ©rard Genette’s structuralist theory of transtextuality as a framework to present how a web of intertextual relationships is clearly formed between the Alice books and The Matrix.

Excerpt: (from media kit)

“In The Matrix, Neo comes from the Oracle a bit disappointed with what he had just found out, but Morpheus tries to show him the way: “Neo, sooner or later, you’re going to realize, just as I did, that there’s a difference between knowing the path... and walking the path...” Alice wakes up only when she is ready to face the real world, just as Neo has to understand that, in order to defeat the agents and end the war, he has to face his demons and take control of his own life. […]

In The Matrix, Cypher confesses his regrets to Neo over getting unplugged. “You know, I know what you’re thinking, because right now I’m thinking the same thing. Actually, I’ve been thinking it ever since I got here... Why, oh why, didn’t I take... the blue pill?” The repeated phrase shows hesitation and the intensity of Cypher’s emotions. Neither Alice nor Cypher understand the new world they have entered, and both have second thoughts about remaining there. But, while Alice tries to unlock the secret of wonderland and eventually is able to control it, just as Neo does in the end, Cypher betrays his crew members in a desperate move to be reinserted into the Matrix. Despite an ever-changing environment and logic, both Alice and Neo continue to deal with the challenges that beset them. No prior experience in wonderland or the Matrix can teach them about what to expect in their next undertaking; nevertheless they manage to get through each encounter, ready to face new situations.”

My review:

The book compares three literary works: The matrix, Alice in wonderland, and through the looking glass. I chose the book because it was different from what I normally read. Not a novel or a novella or a poetry collection. The author is comparing similarities, meaning, messages, and relationships.

The book wants to compare the following:
  • Genette's intertextuality: direct quotations and allusions
  • Paratextuality: illustrations and captions
  • architextuality: literary conventions
  • metatextuality: explicit and implicit comments
  • hypertextuality: elaboration of ideas.
The book definitely makes me glad I took psychology. I have written literary reviews before. This review was in-depth. Voicu also cites his sources. yay. The first few chapters discussed intertextuality and the different types of intertextuality. Chapter 3 starts discussing the Matrix. The Matrix was created by the Wachowski Brothers in 1999. I did not know the Matrix was a book, prior to becoming a movie. I have seen all three movies, but have not read any of the Matrix books. The Matrix definitely changed the face of cinema. I loved how Neo lived in a perceived reality, and then later found out it was an illusion. This concept can apply to life. For example, people can be in a relationship and think everything is ok, when the other is plotting an escape route.

Chapter 4 discusses Alice. Alice in wonderland and through the looking glass was written by Lewis Carroll. I have read both books. Love me some Carroll. The book is children's. The book is fantasy and illusion.

I do like how in the Matrix, Neo has to take either the red pill or the blue pill. In Alice in wonderland, Alice takes a pill to be bigger or smaller. Also, Both Alice and Neo are/was living in a dream-like state. Neo thought his world was real, while Alice visited an alternate reality, filled with a Queen of Hearts, A March Hare. White Rabbit, A Mad Hatter,  Tweedle Dee and Dum, and the Cheshire Cat.

The author also discussed studies, which compared the Alice books to the Matrix. Some similarities included:
  • The books focus on alternate realities. Nothing is truly what it seems.
  • Each book has two settings: the alternate world and the real world. Alice is in the real world at the beginning and end of the book, while in Wonderland for most of the Book. Neo starts off in the perceived real world, but travels through the matrix..
  • Both movies have a lot of visual effects.
  • Both books challenge what is real and what is not real.
  • Both books have a set of rules or lack of rules, which are challenged and/or broken.
  • Each book is filled with strange characters: friends and foes. When I think Alice, I think of the Caterpillar blowing smoke rings or the rabbit saying he's late, he's late. There is also the infamous Queen of Hearts. I think of the Matrix, I think of Morpheus, Trinity, and the Oracle. I also think of the Agents.

Some differences:
  • The Alice books is fantasy-based, while the Matrix is more science-fiction.
  • The Alice books stimulates your imagination, while the Matrix stimulates questions (What is reality? Are we living in the Matrix). Funny story, I know a few folks, who thought we are really living in a Matrix.
  • Alice does not know she is experiencing a dream, until the end of the book. Neo realizes something is different in his perceived reality.

How to get good reviews by Theo Rodgers Book Review, Book Tour, and Giveaway (Goddess Fish).

Posted on 22:25 by Unknown
I read How to get good reviews on Amazon by Theo Rodgers, in exchange for review from Goddess Fish Promotions. This review is lengthy because reading and reviewing books is a major part of my lifestyle.

About the Book: copied from media kit

How To Get Good Reviews On Amazon is a simple, no-nonsense guide that teaches exactly what it says it does. Based on both psychological science and thousands of hours of conversation with some of Amazon’s top reviewers, it takes you behind the scenes into the reviewing subculture that has grown up on Amazon’s website. It gives you a deep, insider’s knowledge of how the top reviewers think and operate. It not only shows you what to do: it takes you inside the reviewers’ heads so that you can see for yourself both how these techniques work and why they’re so effective. Lessons include:
  • A simple, four-part formula for writing emails that get your work reviewed.
  • Three things never to say when communicating with reviewers!
  • How to pick reviewers who are more likely to give you a good review.
  • How to reduce the chance that a reviewer you contact will post a bad review – even if it turns out they don’t like your work!
  • How people get caught out when receiving reviews from friends and family
This book teaches an honest, straightforward approach that works. It works because it’s not based gimmicks or tricks but on a real understanding of how Amazon reviewers operate: most of all on what they expect from authors and other sellers. If you want to know how to talk to Amazon reviewers in a way that will make them respect you as a professional and see you as the kind of seller they actually want to help, this is the book for you.

About the author:copied from media kit

Theo Rogers combines years of coalface experience on Amazon's website with formal training and
qualifications in a range of business and social science disciplines. He's spent literally thousands of hours talking with Amazon reviewers, getting inside their heads, and learning what makes them tick. He's spent almost as many hours observing the carnage that so often takes place on Amazon's forums. In the process he's developed a deep insider's knowledge of the reviewing subculture that's grown up on Amazon's website. He's also seen a lot of authors and other would-be sellers make the same mistakes in their dealings with that subculture - over and over again. As a result of his experiences, Theo has come to believe that yes, there is a simple formula that works: a way of dealing with reviewers that's honest, powerful, and extremely effective at winning reviewers over, getting them on your side, and making them actually want to help you. https://www.facebook.com/TheTheoRogers

Excerpt:copied from media kit

One of the most fundamental ideas in this booklet is that there’s a definite reviewing subculture that
has grown up on Amazon’s website. Like any culture, it has its own particular values and mores: its
own ideas about what’s right and what’s wrong. When we come to the issue of shill reviews, we collide headlong with the values of the reviewing culture. As you might expect, most reviewers see shills – and the sellers who use them – as very, very wrong. Because this section is all about values, I think it’s important to stress that I’m writing here as your guide to Amazon’s reviewing subculture. I’m not writing as a missionary on its behalf. Simply put, I believe that your journey through the Amazon Jungle will be smoother, easier, and more successful if along the way you’re respectful of the values of the natives who dwell there. For that reason, I’m going to lay out for you some of the more commonly held tenants: the basic beliefs that most of the natives would hold to. It’s not for me to tell you whether you should embrace these values to the core of your being and make them your own. I’m just telling you that as a matter of pure pragmatism, you are going to make trouble for yourself if you ignore them.

My Review:

I been reviewing books since 2011. I have posted almost 200 reviews on Amazon, Shelfari, Library Thing, Good Reads, and my blog, but when it comes to reviews on my own books, I may have one or two. Reviews help some people determine if and when to buy a particular product or review. Of course, you want your reviews to be helpful (love it when I get that email). I wanted to read this book to learn how to get more reviews, in addition to good reviews on book review websites, for my books. I even did a promotion on LibraryThing, thinking I would get some excellent reviews and I got one person, who left a review on Chocolate Kisses.

For me, I usually give 4 to 5 stars for great books, 3 stars for average books, and 1 star for books, which disinterest me. When I have to give a negative review, I usually mention why I did not like the book in concrete terms. I don't attack the author.

So back to the book:

The first chapter deals with the mind of the average Amazon Reviewer. Why do people review books? Why would they review your book? For me, I had few reviews on Amazon, prior to becoming a blogger. I started reviewing more books when I got involved with Blogging. I even started reviewing books I read for business or pleasure. I use reviews to describe a product; tell people how much I liked a product or book; or tell people, how much I disliked a product or book. I also sometimes do video reviews, if I don't feel like typing. Why would I review your book: I read the description first. Non fiction and special needs books get priority over fiction. For non-fiction, if I can apply the material to my life and struggles, I will chose to review the book. Reviews also help improve rank. My old rank was in the millions. My new rank well is in the 23,944, with 69 helpful reviews. I got top reviewer status. I was happy to receive that honor. Never won too many awards and trophies in real life, but I love my top reviewer status on Amazon. I have arrived LOL. Any rank over 1000 gets top reviewer ranking. You can earn badges if you are in the top 1000. Your rank can improve with helpful votes. People can vote yes or no to your reviews.

The second chapter: discusses selecting reviewers. The author discusses the four P's of marketing when selecting reviewers.

  • Product: What are you selling? What are you asking people to review? Has your book been edited? proof read? Is an an advanced reader copy? Is it a finished copy? Do you want the reviewers to help point out the flaws in the book? You also have to consider language. If your book uses lots of slang or ebonics for example, let the readers know. For example, I was asked to read and edit a street lit book for a random dude online. The book had slang, bad grammar, bad spelling, and punctuation from the beginning. I wasn't sure if the author did it like that on purpose or wanted me to correct spelling on every other word. The author told me he wanted it like that after I finished editing the book.
  • Price: how much are you selling the product for?
  • Place: Where are you selling your products?
  • Promotion: What is the book about? Promotion includes marketing and advertising. Promotion also involves finding people, who will review your book. But, don't make it a requirement to like your book. I have seen places (book tours, for example), which say if you can't rank the book 3 stars, contact them and let them know why, instead of posting the review publicly. I even had one case on Library Thing, where I won a member giveaway book, and the public relations rep, said the author don't like negative reviews. Their tone was very crass and it made me not want to read the book, let alone review it. I don't remember the name of the book, but I remember the author. Makes me not want to request any of the author's books again because of his or her representative.
How do you select reviewers? for me, I have found reviewers in book review books on facebook, ning, library thing, twitter, and other sites. The author suggests looking for reviewers by Amazon Rank, such as a top reviewer. One problem with this is top reviewers, even people, like me, who review books, get a lot of book review requests. It can be overwhelming. Authors can also hit up folks with average ranks, who want to build up their ranks. You also can offer free books or an incentive for reviewers to choose your book. I love free books and gift cards. You don't want someone to spend a lot of money on your book, just to review it. Remember, to tell your reviewers to mention they got the book for free for honest review to abide by FTC standards.

Chapter 3 focuses on contacting reviewers: email; leaving a comment on one of their reviews; using social media; etc. Rodgers also suggests not asking for a positive review; complain about previous bad reviews; or offer the reviewer money.

Chapter 4 focuses on what happens after the review is posted: You can do nothing. The review is posted. Mission accomplished. You can also send a thank you note to the reviewer. I seen cases where the authors or representatives email the reviewer, asking to be added to future books to be reviewed lists. But do not leave comments only on five star reviews or attack people, who left bad reviews. There was an incident a while back, where an author, who had a pending book deal, attacked some of his critics and the company on Amazon and Facebook. The thread was posted online in a few of my other book reviewer and author groups, in addition to shared across the internet via social media. That one bad post made a lot of reviewers mad, not to mention, it may make the author lose a potential book deal. Not everyone will like a book, but don't take it out on them and social media, not to mention your publishing company.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading this book. I read it within two hours.

Book Blurb: (from media kit)
Neal Sinclair meets David Bankston in a college town bar. He’s tall, dark, and handsome, and wears a Stetson like nobody’s business. When they dance, inner passion heats up while inhibitions melt away. Neal quickly discovers David’s not a Southerner at all. He’s a Boston architect, in Tuscaloosa for only one night. The next morning, they struggle to walk away from something that caught them both by surprise. Time doesn’t diminish the ache they feel in each other’s absence. Unable to stay apart, David arranges to take Neal to watch her beloved Crimson Tide play in a football bowl game. Reunited, they’re determined to make it work. When separated, they perfect the art of open communication. They each know that true love is a long shot. But distance isn’t the only thing standing in their way. Unbeknownst to her, Neal’s overprotective father is, too. With so much conspiring against them, can a natural disaster turn the odds in their favor?
Excerpt One:

“Hey, cowboy. How about a dance?” As soon as the words were out of her mouth, she cringed. Wow, even to my own ears that sounded way too cheesy. She looked him over as he stood with the sole of one boot propped against the wall, and a Stetson perched atop his head. He had sinfully good looks, and his olive complexion and wavy black hair gave him a swarthy, pirate-like appeal. “Evening.” He nodded, but his gaze remained focused on the room, never lingering in one place too long. Clearly, she had been dismissed. So much for my skill at playing the vamp. This is shaping up to be an epic fail. With each swig he took from that long-necked beer bottle, however, she found herself wanting nothing more than to offer to lick off the moisture that clung to his mouth after every swallow. She decided not to give up so easily. “You’re about empty. How about a second round? My treat?” He locked eyes with her then, and humor glinted in his.

The gorgeous stranger rewarded her with a dazzling smile even as he shook his head in polite refusal. “Thank you, but no.” His fingers were long, and his hand was broad. He exuded sex appeal. But she wasn’t used to these games of pursuit. It was usually the other way around, and she was fending off the unwanted advances. Jeez, I must look utterly pathetic to him just standing here with doe eyes. I don’t know what possessed me to think I could ever stand a chance with someone like him. She started to back away when suddenly the band began to play the first strains of “Sweet Home Alabama.” She took it as a sign that this might be her lucky night after all. She quickly downed the rest of her sour apple martini to bolster her courage and then deposited the empty glass on a nearby table. “Are you just passing through?” She spoke loudly to be heard above the cacophony of their surroundings.

“I only came in for a beer—nothing else. I leave town in the morning.” “I get it. No entanglements, right? But it’s just one dance. And judging by your accent, you aren’t from around here. So I’m willing to overlook the fact that you don’t know it’s an unwritten law that when that particular song comes on, it’s lady’s choice. She can ask any man to dance, and he can’t say no.” “Can’t, huh? Is that a fact?” A playful grin toyed at the corners of his mouth. “It is when you’re in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. That song’s a sacred anthem around here. So, cowboy, I’m asking you once again. You wanna dance?” She put one hand on her hip and extended the other toward him, waiting. Hoping he would acquiesce. His hesitation surprised her. Instead of accepting immediately, he purposefully raked his eyes over her from head to toe.  “Go ahead. I’ve got all night.” She teased him at the flagrant assessment of her assets. She welcomed the appraisal. She knew she looked good tonight. Finally he budged, putting both feet on the ground and taking a step closer. “All right then. You lead the way.” He smirked, as if amused by the whole incident.

She smiled and turned toward the wooden floor near the stage, their fingers joined behind her as they walked. When they were front and center, she put her hands on his shoulders while his immediately came to rest on her hips. Although it wasn’t a particularly slow song, he pulled her close until their bodies touched, and they began to move in time to the music. He was tall and towered over her, despite her high heels, so he bent slightly and introduced himself. “I’m David. What’s your name?” The feel of his warm breath against her face made the air around her crackle. She inhaled the scent of him. It was equal parts of shampoo, spice, and suds, and it was more intoxicating to her than the vodka had been. She breathed deeply then looked up into his brown eyes. “Neal.” He raised an eyebrow in apparent surprise at the revelation. “That’s an unusual name for a girl. My best friend in high school was named Neil.” “Cowboy, it may sound like a boy’s name, but I can assure you I am one-hundred-percent genuine woman.”He let his hands wander over the luscious curve of her bottom. Pressing his lips against her ear, he dared her. “Prove it.”

White Chalk Book Review, Blog Tour, and Giveaway

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown

I read White Chalk by Pavarti K. Tyler for honest review.

About the book:(copied from media kit)
Chelle isn’t a typical 13-year-old girl—she doesn’t laugh with friends, play sports, or hang out at the mall after school. Instead, she navigates a world well beyond her years. Life in Dawson, ND spins on as she grasps at people, pleading for someone to save her—to return her to the simple childhood of unicorns on her bedroom wall and stories on her father’s knee. When Troy Christiansen walks into her life, Chelle is desperate to believe his arrival will be her salvation. So much so, she forgets to save herself. After experiencing a tragedy at school, her world begins to crack, causing a deeper scar in her already fragile psyche. My review:
This book required me to go through great depths to read it. Once again, Kindle for PC would not load up right away. Once it loaded, it froze. Luckily, I copied the book to the Kindle and the phone. I read the book over the phone. This process was new to me. I am use to paging down or using the arrows to swipe. I am not used to using my fingers. This android phone is getting better and better.

I liked the book from the beginning. The book is about Chelle. Chelle in in middle school, eight grade, 13 years old. . She hardly gets into trouble. She falls for Troy Christiansen (16 years old. ummm 16 and in middle school?) quickly, the first day she sees him. Troy does not care if he upsets authority, by the way.  He can drive and does not follow curfew.

She wanted to find a way to get to know Troy. What started as a conversation over a snack cake, lead to Chelle skipping class and getting into serious trouble, after she gets caught.

The book was a good read. I liked the flow and sentence structure. The book does contain cuss words (sh*t, f*ck). The book also contains an inappropriate, sexual scene, between Chelle and a teacher.

Chivalry by Zach Hunter Book Review Tyndale House

Posted on 04:23 by Unknown
I read Chivalry: the quest for a personal code of honor in an unjust world.  by Zach Hunter, for honest review from Tyndale House (Tyndale Blog Network).

The book is about 10 principles of ancient knights combined with teachings of Jesus, that we can use today. How can we help others? How can we defend the oppressed? How do we act with integrity? How do we live with courage and significance?

The 10 principles:

  1. I will not go on this journey alone
  2. I will never attack from behind
  3. I will practice self control and selflessness
  4. I will respect life and freedom
  5. I will fight only for the sake of those who are unable to defend themselves, for in the defense of justice.
  6. I will honor truth and will always keep my promises
  7. I will fear no evil
  8. I will always follow the law, unless it goes against what is moral and good
  9. I will live and die with honor
  10. I will never abandon my quest
My Review:

I was not sure what to expect when I requested this book. By the time, It arrived, I thought, based on the cover, it was a fiction, based on science fiction, fantasy, medieval times. Tyndale does not release the books until the books are taken down from the request screen. I loved reading the book. I was highlighting from the first chapter.

The first chapter discussed Carlos and his love of trees. Carlos reminded me of Pete Nelson from Treehouse Masters on Animal Planet. He loved to grow them, watch them, study the soil, and study the roots. Carlos got married, had kids, and eventually his wife died. After his wife died, one of his kids, visited with his grandkids. Carlos made a powerful analogy about trees, which I enjoyed.

When a young tree is planted, it is at risk of being whipped about by the wind....If the sapling is tied to a single stake and pulled in one direction, it will grow up learning hard to that side. It will be uprooted by a storm or grow crooked. That's why it is important to stake a tree from multiple directions. The tension on three different sides helps a tree grow straight and true. Its roots will deepen, its trunk will strengthen, and it will bear more fruit (p. 5).

We need roots to help us grow. We need people, who will be our root in life. People, who will support us when we are falling. Give us strength when we are going through. We can not rely on one human to help us on the journey called life. We can not do this alone, either (which is a problem, I struggle with. I am an introvert, I hate relying on people, but I am learning that I have to (need to). I need to socialize. I need to build relations with people. I need to network and build a community of friends, family, and others. But, your community needs to include mentors. Someone to hold me accountable. Someone, who will be honest. Someone who wants me to grow. Someone to share their personal experiences and I will do the same. I have my mentors. and I am a few other's mentors. I know my personal brand of Stacie is not always accepted and I am learning that is ok. I can be too blunt for my own good. I don't know tact that well.

Chapter 2 focused on Catalina, who was gossipping behind her friend's back. She realized too late she hurt her relationships and through a priest's words, realized things will never be the same. The priest gave Catalina a task, which involved a chicken and feathers. People don't need to backstab, gossip, attack from behind, or even engage in malicious sarcasm (p. 16). I definitely use a lot of sarcasm. We (I) need to watch my words.

Chapter 3 focused on self-control. We need to think first, then act second. The book discussed sexual relations. (posting this on Celibacy Diaries as well). In relationships, there are things you should and should not do. We need to maintain control, so we don't end up in regret. Self control doesn't just mean avoiding something, but also focusing on goals (p. 33 to 34). Simply avoiding temptation does not mean temptation will not occur (learned that from the celibacy is sexy chat last week). Temptation is everywhere (media, television, radio, magazines, online, etc). The book talked about focusing on what you want from a committed, married relationship. For example, Stacie wants a christian, celibate man, who can put up with special needs kids. One thing, which stood out in chapter 3 was "there is no such thing as just a movie, just a song, just words, just a kiss. nothing is trivial. everything has repercussions. (p. 37).

The rest of the book followed the same set-up---shared someone's story, the author shared a story, followed by sound, biblical advice. At the end of the book, Hunter provided discussion questions for personal bible study or small group bible study. Each section also contains an oath or declaration, where you sign and date. You also can write your own pledge on how to grow more chivalrous.

Why is the Sky Blue? Book Review, Blog Tour. Reading Addiction Blog Tours.

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown
I reviewed Why is the Sky Blue by Shabana Muhajir, in exchange for review from Reading Addiction Blog Tours.

My Review:
The story is about two little boys and their mother, who visit the beach. One brings his art supplies and the other brings his toys. It's an nice day at the beach. After some observation, the boys ask their mother, why is the sky blue? The book then moves into an explanation of why the sky is blue. So, the book is now part children's and part educational (science). The mother explains the colors of the rainbow and the order of colors in the rainbow. The book also explains wavelengths (Brings me back to high school) and briefly touches the speed of light. The book also has a speech bubble about the earth's atmosphere. Finally, the book ended with an experiment with rainbows. There is also a glossary at the end of the book.

I loved reading the book. It was a quick read. I chose the book to read to the kids. Love any children's book, which is interesting, but not too long to lose attention. The book touches different aspects of science. great to incorporate into a homeschool curriculum. Loved reading the book.

Reading Addiction Blog Tours
I read The Pact by Graeme Brown, in exchange for review from Reading Addiction Blog Tours.

About the Book:
Will Lesterall grew up in his father's castle, safe from the outside world, full of Goblins, Ogres, Trolls, Knights, and Kings. The pact has kept the kingdom safe. Will is drawn into a conflict of Gods and a woman. The conflict requires blood and loyalty, in addition to changing Will for good.

My Review:
The book was a good, quick read, full of mystical creatures and kingdom battles. Next, The book did contain a lot of characters, which was a little confusing in the beginning though. The book is meant to be read slow or you will get lost easily.

The beginning had many kingdoms gathering together at Fort Lesterall for food and fun, in addition to celebrating the Pact. Fort Lesterall is flourishing and thriving for over 200 years. The Pact has kept the kingdom protected from harm. Will has been sheltered at the Fort for most of his life, because of the Pact. He has little real-life experience, except for the life behind the fort. Will has always been intrigued by his Uncle's stories of Goblins, Knights, and Trolls. The Pact will soon be challenged by the Unborns (Goblins), which means war. Will wants to protect the Fort and willing to fight for his kingdom.

Author Bio: (copied from website)

Graeme Brown is has been enchanted by the epic fantasy genre since he was a child, and consequently he started creating his own world with its stories at the age of thirteen. Influenced by writers like J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and George R. R. Martin, he has finally brought the first of those stories to life with his debut title, a short story called The Pact—48 pages that will whisk you away to a dark, medieval fantasy world with gritty realism. When he’s not
writing, he can be found exploring number theory problems or writing computer programs, training for a marathon, or unwinding in a yoga hot room. He has also explored other facets of art, both as a hobby and a profession, including vector graphics, pen and ink, classical piano, and web design. Despite being a full time student and a junior editor for Champagne Books, he makes sure to do a little writing every day. He is presently busy with the first of many sequels to The Pact, A Thousand Roads. For more about Graeme, visit his blog, Blog or on Twitter

Excerpt: (from media kit)

The Stablehouse climbed three stories, a narrow building just twenty feet shy from touching the top of the double outer wall that surrounded the castle’s north flank. Lights shone in the top floor windows and a few others at ground level, where the horses were kept. Will hurried across the dark stones. The soft tap of his shoes against the cobbles echoed in the empty Square. In the middle, where the ground sloped down toward the sewer drains, the statue of Amarr the Barbarian cast a long shadow. Will passed into it and stopped. He heard voices. Two men spoke in hushed tones, but their words carried when the wind wasn’t gusting. “It’s that hag, I tell ya,” came one voice. “She’s roundin’ them up, preparing one of her big spells, she is. I heards there’s a sacrifice comin’, and she means to raise the dead.”

“Don’t be stupid, Roth.” Will recognized the raspy tone at once. It belonged to Mern, the whitesmith, whose half-slashed throat had never fully healed. Will squinted, but couldn’t see where the voices came from, other than realizing they drifted over from the dark, walled yard outside Hellistead’s Tavern. “I’ll not have ya callin’ me stupid. Oh no. I know what this is about an’hoo. You’re just afraids, justs protectin’ yurself. Ya know whatcha got in it, ands I don’t blame you for bitin’ your tongue.” “Quiet, you hay-brained crofter,” Mern spat. “Tonight’s not a night to whisper about such treacheries. The Lord Ham will cut your tongue out, and the world’ll be a better place for it if he does.” “Old Cren will put it back, if he do, but I says he’d best act quick, or he’ll be lacking for the parts as fits him proper. The night’s black, Mern, and it’s gettin’ blacker yet.”

There was a hollow clatter, then sharp hisses. The man who spoke improperly cursed in words that would have made Grandma Mae gasp then Will heard quick footsteps and a series of clunks. He looked back to the castle, to where father gathered his fighters, then the other way, to the Stablehouse. If father’s in trouble, I have to warn him. Will knew his words wouldn’t be taken seriously, though. He began to run across the stone expanse. Fort Lesterall won’t fall. Mern’s a wicked man, and whoever that other one is, he’s got no wits. Cren’s just an old woman who lives in the woods. She probably doesn’t even exist. The side door to the Stablehouse opened as Will arrived, revealing a long labyrinth of stalls lit by rows of hanging lanterns. Jak peeked from behind the door, and Will slipped inside. When the older boy closed it, the dangerous night seemed far away. They were alone, Jak peering at Will, a curry comb still clasped in his hand.

He was broad-limbed and of average height, with tousled hair the color of wet earth and eyes like onyx. As usual, he smelled of straw and horse manure, but that only made him all the more inviting. Jak grinned. “I thought you’d hurry over after the feast proper. Too many clouds tonight, though. I’m afraid we won’t be spying Hell’s Cap, but I’ve another surprise for you. Found it myself, last night.”“We won’t be going to the groves, Jak.” Will lowered his voice. “The Unborns are going to attack. Alter Dun showed the Red Token. That means the Unborns have challenged us. The Pact is broken. Even as we speak, my father’s gathering an army.” “Of course he is.” Will turned toward the metal spiral stair. Barrik, a wiry man with saltand-pepper hair and a bushy moustache, bent his impressive height as he descended from the second floor serving quarters. “I’ve a hundred retainers to see to and that’s lots of horseshit, my little prince.

A good thing they’ve taken to the barracks. I’m full, and there’s a thousand more coming, twenty companies marching under you uncle’s banner knight, Telliken. If we hold the night, then there will be others, and we’ll feed the Unborns hell like they haven’t seen in centuries. But if what I’ve heard’s true, then they have hell to feed us first, before we can draw breath.” Will gaped at the Master of Stables then shook his head fiercely. “Fort Lesterall cannot fall.” Barrik grunted, though it sounded like a laugh. He picked up a pail and carried it to a nearby stall. “I wish I believed that, lad, but this world’s not run on luck, I’m afraid. A man forges his own blade then learns to use it, or he gets cut by everyone around him. This world’s a fierce battlefield, a bitch with a thousand teeth.” “We can fight with them,” Jak insisted. “I’ve practiced with the sword you gave me lots of times in the groves. I’m not bad.” “You would be with armor on.” Barrik came out of the stall with a pail full of black dung. He looked at Will, at Jak, his expression grave. “No, you boys have another errand...

Precious Embrace Blog Tour

Posted on 15:10 by Unknown

I reviewed Precious Embrace, in exchange for review from Reading Addiction Blog Tours. The book was written by Dana Mason. Precious Embrace is the 2nd book in a series. The First book was Dangerous Embrace. The book was published by Sapphire Star Publishing. The book is available on Kindle, Nook, and Paperback.

About the Book: (copied from Sapphire Star Publishing)
Reading Addiction Blog ToursA second divorce and a new baby wasn’t the vision Alison Hayes had for her future. Now a single mother with two young boys, she wants to focus on her kids and what’s left of her stagnant career. When Detective Johnny Rhay Bennett breezes into her life with his country-boy accent, she wants to run. She doesn’t need another man in her life, or another reason to make people talk. But when her worst nightmare becomes a reality, Johnny is the only person who can pull Ali out of her despair, forcing her to stay strong and not give up hope of finding her missing child. Who falls in love after a one-night stand? Johnny Rhay doesn’t believe it’s possible until it happens to him. With Nashville in his rear-view mirror, he’s determined to convince Alison she loves him too, even if it means moving to the West Coast. Ali’s not easy, and she’s living on just this side of bitter after her divorce, but Johnny doesn’t care. He’s up for the challenge. At least, he believes he’s up for it until baby Micah is stolen right out from under his nose. Now Johnny has to keep it together and get that sweet little boy home safe before his dreams of having a family vanish too.

Short Excerpt:
Ali lowered her eyes. She didn’t want him to see the truth when he looked at her. Gosh and what would people say if she started seeing Johnny before finalizing her divorce? Regardless of her feelings, she needed to control herself, and not jump into another situation like she did with Carl. She shook her head at that. “It’s not punishment, just cautiousness. I’m doing what I think is best for my family.” She cleared her throat. “Can I ask you a question?” He nodded dropping his head down to look at Micah. “Did you know you were moving out here when we were together in Maui?” “I had lunch with Brian and Julie in Hawaii after you left. I mentioned to him that I was thinking of leaving Nashville. He suggested Santa Rosa.” He lifted his eyes to meet hers. “My turn.” Her heart did a little skip and she nodded in agreement. “How did you feel when you got on that plane in Hawaii to go home?” Ali propped her elbow on the table and rested her head in her hand. She remembered distinctly how she felt when she boarded her plane. The reminder made her stomach flip-flop. She’d never felt like that in her life. She’d only stayed in Hawaii for a couple of days. Johnny had begged her to stay for a few more, but at two months old, she couldn’t bear leaving Micah for that long. Johnny had another week before going home, but he insisted on taking her to the airport. Said he didn’t want her to go alone.
They’d stayed up all night, even watched the Maui sunrise together. The night reminded her of being a teenager, fighting sleep to stay on the phone with a boy…talking about everything, yet talking about nothing important. Simply being together was enough for them in the moment. It was such a great night. She’d never forget how she felt being there with him. “Why would you ask me that?”“I answered your question, you answer mine.”“Honestly.” Her voice lowered and her eyes focused on her plate. “Crazy…exhilarated, and scared, and free, and sad, and special, and miserable, and…loved…all at the same time.” Ali frowned and wanted to cry. She shook it off and stood to clear their plates, almost knocking her chair to the ground in her rush to get up. Their night together had been a wonderful break from her regular everyday troubles and her regular everyday life…but it wasn’t real life, and she couldn’t pretend differently. She was a wreck of a woman, with a new baby and a pending divorce. “Ali,” he said as she stepped to the sink. “How about when you got home—when you got back to Santa Rosa?”“Why do you want to know this? It doesn’t change anything.” she said,
slamming the plates into the sink. “Did you feel lost…lonely? Like you had just walked away from something you would never feel again?” Ali looked up to find him standing right next to her. “How—”
“How did I know?” he asked before she could get her sentence out. Ali stared at him not sure what to say. “How do you?” “Because I felt exactly the same way. Watching you fly away killed me.” He
leaned his hip on the kitchen counter, cradling the sleeping baby in his left arm. “When I got home to Nashville, I felt sick with it.”

My Review:
I enjoyed reading the book. The book starts out with Johnny visiting Ali. They had a one-night stand a few months ago and she never expected to see him again. Johnny just moved into town permanently. Ali is in the process of a divorce, but her and Johnny are still attracted to one another. Johnny still wants to be friends, even if they are not lovers ever again.

The book was well-written and flowed well. I did enjoy how Johnny interacted with Micah, Ali's son. I wish I had someone, who interacted with my children to that extent. Definitely hard being a single parent. I can definitely relate.

Barefoot Summer Book Review, Blog Tour, and Giveaway

Posted on 00:55 by Unknown
I read Barefoot Summer, in exchange for honest review from Litfuse. The book was written by Denise Hunter and published by Thomas Nelson. I received a paperback copy of the book.

My Review:

I loved the book. I read over five chapters during the first read. Madison is a veterinarian. She is active in her community.  Madison is still grieving over the loss of her brother, who drowned. She wants to win a boat race, in memory of her brother, but she is afraid of water and do not know how to sail. Madison wins a raffle for sailing lessons, but due to a last minute instructor change, stuck with a person, she does not like (Beckett). Her family is divided on her racing. Beckett is battling his own demons, but still works to teach Madison, even though he will be her competition in the race.

The book is Christian-based. The scenes were descriptive. Had to read some scenes over because they was hard to handle. This was a good read and I enjoyed the book. This book was definitely not what I was expecting.

About the Book:
Madison's heart has been closed for years. But one summer can change everything.

In the years since her twin brother's tragic drowning, Madison has struggled with her ability to trust God--or anyone else, for that matter. It was her brother's dream to win the annual River Sail Regatta in their small harbor town of Chapel Springs, Indiana. And Madison's determined to honor his legacy by making his dream her own. Maybe then she can finally find closure.

But learning to sail means learning to swim. And her instructor is Beckett O'Reilly, a man who already has two strikes against him in Madison's eyes. Being on the water terrifies Madison. But Beckett's calming presence and unwavering confidence eases her fear. And as much as she'd like to deny it, the chemistry between them is electrifying.

As her feelings for him grow, a fledging faith begins to take root in her soul, as well. With Beckett, Madison feels alive for the first time in years--carefree and confident she can win the regatta, maybe even find love.

But Beckett harbors a secret that will test the limits of their love and the depth of Madison's faith. Will their love survive summer's challenge? And will achieving her brother's dream give Madison the peace she desperately seeks?

The Face of the Earth Book Review and Facebook Party

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
I read the Face of the Earth, in exchange for review from Litfuse. The book was written by Deborah Raney.

My review:

The book starts off with Mitchell heading home from work (principal at at a school). His wife, Jill, supposed to be on her way home from a professional conference. The voicemail said she be home around 5, but she never showed up. This was supposed to be their staycation weekend. Their daughter just left for college. Jill is missing and no one knows where to find her. Was it an accident? death? ran away from home? You also have Shelley, the next-door neighbor, who has feelings for Mitchell. Shelley helps with the search of her best friend. Jill also had recently been in contact with an ex on facebook.

The book was excellent. gripping, intense. The first day, i opened the book, I read more than 60 pages on Adobe Reader Editions.

About the Book:
When Mitchell Brannon's beloved wife of twenty years kisses him goodbye one autumn morning, he has little idea that his life is about to change forever. Mitch returns from work early that evening, surprised Jill's car isn't inthe garage. Her conference in Kansas City is only a few hours' drive from their little town of Sylvia, Missouri. But her voice on the answering machine makes him smile. "Hey, babe, I'm just now checking out of the hotel, but I'll stop and pick up something for dinner. Love you."

Mitch sets the table with their best china and lights some candles, looking forward to their first weekend as empty nesters.

But at eight o'clock, the candles have burned to stubs and Jill still hasn't shown up. Mitch tries her cell phone only to get her voice mail over and over again. Their two college kids haven't heard from their mom either.
At midnight, Mitch's irritation turns to dread. And later, when the police and Missouri Highway Patrol have turned up nothing, the Kansas City hotel calls to say they've found property belonging to Jill in a hotel maid's possession.

Mitch enlists the help of their next-door neighbor, Jill's best friend, Shelley, and together they search for clues to Jill's disappearance. As days turn into weeks and weeks into months, Mitch and Shelley's friendship grows ever closer--and decidedly complicated with Jill as the tie that binds them together. Just when Shelley decides to finally reveal her feelings for Mitch, a clue to Jill's whereabouts is uncovered. But every lead seems to be a dead end, and Mitch wonders how he can honor the vows he made to a woman who has seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth.

The Offering by Angela Hunt

Posted on 00:40 by Unknown
I read The Offering  by Angela Hunt, in exchange from Litfuse. The book is published by Howard Books.

My Review:
I chose this book because I liked the description. Mandy Lisandra is a wife to Gideon and a mother to Marilee. Mandy works part-time at a Cuban grocery store for Mama Isa (father-in-law's sister) and her father-in-law. The family has bills to pay, especially for private school for Marilee. She is also worried about her husband, getting deployed at anytime, not to mention getting hurt or killed. Mandy wanted to earn money as a surrogate for a childless couple. Mandy got the idea from a customer, who visited the grocery. The customer was a military wife, who learned military wives make good surrogates or gestational carriers. (I think surrogacy is a good idea to help out infertile couples. I am also thinking of selling my eggs to help out others.) At first, Her husband and family thinks she is nuts for wanting to carry another couple's baby, but her husband thinks it's a good idea later.

Her husband, who is in the military dies, while she is pregnant. She gives up the child, but wonders later, if she gave away her own biological child, versus the surrogate's child. A question arises: if the baby is hers, will she take the baby from the only family the baby knows?

The family Mandy chose was from France. Simone and Damien Amblour want to have a child, to inherit the family's winery. Damien's other kids do not want to take over. Simone and Damien have used gestational carriers before, but each resulted in early miscarriage (that was hard for me to read. I had two miscarriages). I almost really lost it when Mandy was spotting, shortly after getting pregnant.

The book was a good read. I liked the scenes. Very descriptive. Easy to get lost in. I love the family dynamics between Gideon, Mandy, and Marilee. I also love the dynamics between Mandy and her in-laws, and the customers at the store. Like the nudist, who frequents the store.  There is also a river reference, which is not explained until a few chapters later. I got confused at first because I had no idea what it meant. The river reference is another way for saying goodbye. I also like how the book is Christian-based. God is mentioned multiple times throughout the book. The book is very good. I read over 100 pages immediately.

About the book: copied from Litfuse
After growing up as an only child, Amanda Lisandra wants a big family. But since she and her soldier husband can't afford to have more children right away, Mandy decides to earn money as a gestational carrier for a childless couple. She loves being pregnant, and while carrying the child she dreams of having her own son and maybe another daughter. Just when the nearly perfect pregnancy is about to conclude, unexpected tragedy enters Mandy's world and leaves her reeling. Devastated by grief, she surrenders the child she was carrying and struggles to regain her emotional equilibrium.
Two years later she studies a photograph of the baby she bore and wonders if the unthinkable has happened---could she have inadvertently given away her own biological child? Over the next few months Mandy struggles to decide between the desires of her grief-stricken heart and what's best for the little boy she has never known.

Once Upon a Prince blog tour

Posted on 01:14 by Unknown
I read Once upon a Prince, in exchange for review from Litfuse Publicity Group.  The book was written by Rachel Hauck and published by Zondervan.

About the book: Copied from Litfuse:

The Royal Wedding Series Book One

Susanna Truitt never dreamed of a great romance or being treated like a princess---just to marry the man she has loved for twelve years. But life isn't going according to plan. When her high-school-sweetheart-turned-Marine-officer breaks up instead of proposing, Susanna scrambles to rebuild her life. The last thing Prince Nathaniel expects to find on his American holiday to St. Simon's Island is the queen of his heart. A prince has duties, and his family's tense political situation has chosen his bride for him. When Prince Nathaniel comes to Susanna's aid under the fabled Lover's Oak, he is blindsided by love. Their lives are worlds apart. He's a royal prince. She's aordinary girl. But everything changes when Susanna receives an invitation to Nathaniel's coronation. It's the ultimate choice. His kingdom or her heart? God's will or their own?

About the author: copied from Litfuse:

Rachel Hauck is the bestselling author of Carol Award winner "Sweet Caroline", and RITA Finalist "Love Starts With Elle", and of the critically acclaimed fiction collaboration with multi-platinum country artist Sara Evans, "The Songbird Novels". She lives in sunny, though sometimes hurricane plagued, central Florida with her husband and their ornery pets. Rachel earned adegree in Journalism from Ohio State University and isa huge Buckeyes football fan. She is the past President of American Christian Fiction Writers and now sits on the board as an Advisor.

My Review:

The book starts out with Susanna, 29,  and her current boyfriend, Adam. Adam was on leave from the military. He wanted to meet her, she said yes and met him. She was hoping for a proposal and he broke up with her. His life had changed and Adam did not see a future with Susanna. . Adam also met someone, while on tour. Chapter two starts Prince Nathaniel's, 32,  story. He is a prince on vacation, kind of bored. Nathaniel's father is ailing and he may be next to succeed as King, which means Nathaniel needs a bride.

I started reading the book. Wasn't sure what to expect, but I was about 15 pages in, before I realized it. The book opened up great, which made me want more of the story. I love a great story, whether fiction or non-fiction, and Once Upon a Prince is a great story.
